Hi,

I am going in for an EEG Tuesday, and I have a question. I was hoping to receive a letter with instructions like what to sleep deprived or what... The nurse was rushing and didn't give me much detail on the EEG.

Anyway, I am going to get an MRI and EEG on the same day... I was wondering, the nurse said I should get only 3 to 4hrs of sleep the night before going, not go 24hrs without sleep.

What should I do? I know I shouldn't drink caffine monday or tuesday (test day) and that I should only get 2 to 3hr sleep or should I just go without any? They want me to sleep some according to the nurse. I know you shouldn't shampoo your hair with conditioner or hairstyling products. Can you do just regular shampoo? Or what? And is there anything else I should do?

I know I shouldn't wear any metal and just wear shorts and a plan tshirt without cellphone, watch and so forth.

Thank you.

With my EEG, they told me to get three to four hours as well, but since I have a hard time waking up and I didn't want to oversleep, I just stayed up and taking a few "power naps" for about 20 minutes. I don't think that skewed the results, but it wouldn't hurt to at least take a little nap. To keep myself awake, I cleaned the house, cooked some food, etc. just to keep me occupied.

As for the shampoo, I'd say take a shower the night before just using shampoo and you should be fine. :)

The most important thing to remember is not to worry. The results were the only thing I would think about and it really stressed me out. You'll do fine, notime! Good vibes being sent your way. :)

I agree with Skyfire, getting zero sleep or just a few hours worth won't make a whole lot of difference for the EEG. The main thing is to be drowsy for the EEG. For the MRI, the technicians will make sure you don't have any metal on you, and will explain everything that's going on. Hope it goes well!
