Forgive me if this has been posted about before. There are a blue million posts about grand mal seizures, and its hard to sift through every one (here and online elsewhere)

On my dr handout about the upcoming video eeg it says there is a possibility of having a grand mal EVEN if you have never had one before.

Has anyone in here ever experienced a grand mal seizure when suddenly taken off their meds -with no history of every having one before???

-feel free to direct me to a certain post to read

This did not happen to us personally - my daughter always had grand mals, so the grand mals she had during her VEEG were nothing new. But I do have a friend who primarily had simple partial seizures (with occasional complex partials) who did have her first grand mal during a VEEG. She says she was actually grateful because during most of her life her seizures had been misdiagnosed as psychological issues, and this confirmed that her epilepsy was "real." But of course it may look very differently to others!

If it helps, that was the only grand mal she ever had in her life. Having one during the VEEG did not mean that she started having them under other circumstances.

oh that helps so much!!! it makes sense that she felt they finally believed her after she had one on camera. I am having so much activity I feel anything could happen.

I just didn't know if that was a dramatic warning or if it actually happened to someone. Thanks!!!

Even if you've never had a seizure, stopping seizure meds cold turkey can trigger one.

Usually, the only times someone is told to stop cold turkey are:
1. As an in-patient, with the aim of triggering seizures during EEG monitoring
OR
2. If the patient is having an allergic reaction to the med.

ah, ok I didn't know stopping the suddenly could/would trigger one. I will be in-patient with the husband there the whole time, so I guess I shouldn't be worried. But its still freaking thinking of it when I've never had one before. Thanks!

Fingers crossed that you don't have the grand mal type of seizure activity. Have you had partial seizures only at this point?

They only confirmed the absence seizures. They never did tell me what the jerky ones were. I hope we will find out with this VEEG!!!! :D

The jerky ones could be myoclonic seizures. When do you have the vEEG?

Well I hope things are stable for you in the meantime.
