Quick question: any possibility of Topamax and Sudafed interaction??

I web searched it (Google knows everything, right? LOL), and I found nothing that says there are ANY possible interactions at all. Which is great!

However I am curious to know if anyone else had a drug interaction with these two?

I have a moderate cold, and have always taken Sudafed because it has always worked. Well this is my first time taking Sudafed with Topamax (only been on it for a few months). Just so happens this is the fist time I have experienced symptoms like restlessness and trouble sleeping (tossed and turned all night, got bout 4-5HRS, 6HRS MAYBE...and I usually sleep 9-10HRS), to which I am not very tired from it.

Some extra info: I have been taking 2 Sudafed every 6 hours, and have been since Sunday night (3 days).

Hi and Welcome SweetPea,

I've taken Topomax for over 10 years now and another name we call it is "Dopemax" because with the side effects of it are sleepiness and forgetfulness. But there could be an interaction with the Topomax and Sudafed such as restlessness. Make sure you get plenty of liquid, too, as Topomax can/does decrease body sweating and causes weight loss.

Call your dr. if you don't improve.

I don't know about interactions, but think I have read that it can reduce seizure threshold in some people. I'd look up that aspect as well.

It's no substitute for your pharmacist. This sounds like a good question for your pharmacist. Most of the time they know even more than the doctors about side effects and interactions, and most of the time they like answering questions for you.

Everyone is an individual. Sudafed, when I mixed it with Lamictal, made me feel like there was a giant bumblebee physically buzzing in my head. Yikes! I stopped taking it and problem solved.

I always go to this site: www.drugs.com, when I have a question about meds. At times, when I have asked my pharmacist about some of my meds, even they have gone to the PDR (Physician's Desk Reference manual) to look up those medications. One of my neighbors long ago was a pharmaceutical rep and gave me her outdated PDRs and that's how I learned.

I was told not to take sudafed by both the phamacist and my nuero but maybe because that was because I am taking keppra? I was so dissapointed too because that stuff works!

Sudafed contains pseudoephedrine, which can exacerbate seizures. Restlessness and insomnia are very definitely common side effects of pseudoephedrine: consider that ephedrine is one of the main chemicals used to make cocaine.
