One thing I've learned is that most insurances won't allow a person to reorder their meds early. For an example, lets say that I'll be on vacation for 2 weeks. Let's say that towards the end of my 2nd week of vacation I'll be completely out of medication and let's say that I don't have access to a phone in order to reorder them. Wouldn't it make sense then to reorder my meds before I go on vacation? But the only problem is is that most insurances won't pay for them if you reorder your meds too early within the month.

I have learned to reorder my medicines on a certain day every month even if I'm not out of them because it just keeps collecting. I must have about 2 months worth of extra medication as back up because what will happen if I lose my insurance? I'd be stuck with the complete cost of them. I take Keppra and Lamictal and the amount of medication that equals to a months worth costs about $2000.00. There's no way I can afford that. I can't take generics either because of the study I'm part of. The generics would cost about $1200.00 for that same amount of medicine. That's still a lot of money without insurance. What would I do without insurance?

I look back on the several years before i had insurance when I was first diagnosed. The lots of trips to the doctors, and the several miles of paper work. The several times waking up to unfamiliar ceilings in hospitals wondering what happened. The getting used to meds, and trips to pharmacist. And of course. The side effects, my favorite being "DEATH". That one always makes refills difficult.

Some insurance companies will fill a 3 month pescription. See if you can have that done?

Also alot of times if you tell your dr that you aren't going to beable to get your pescription filled when it needs to be and you will run out of it, like you, then the dr will write you a new pescription that you can take and have filled so you will have enough. My drs have done this for me a few times.

Sometimes too you can ask your dr if he has any samples that he can give you. These won't cost you anything. Drs have done this for me and other people in my family too. One dr gave my grandma a 2 month supply of sample meds once.

even in uk the nhs is becoming like this..... they wont give me til im near run out and then give me a tiny amount

There's a pharmacy here in California that's called Medco. They provide that same service of refilling 3 months worth of medicine. My insurance isn't contracted with them though.

My doctor is located 2 hours away from me because he's a specialist but he probably would take my word for it if I needed more medicine. However, I could never lie and pretend like I needed more because that would torment my conscience.

They told me that too. That if I needed more meds that they have samples.

I just hope that everyone takes the opportunities they have to get medicine so that if anything goes wrong with insurances that they'll have back up medicine.

I figure if something happens to our insurance and we no longer have it I won't be taking my meds. I shiver to think about it!

I try to refill my meds at the same time because I can only get an errand run from family a couple times a month. Sometimes insurance will fill them early sometimes they don't. For example, last week they only filled 2 of 3 and the next day I received an email, your 3rd med is refilled and ready for pick-up. Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhh! Hopefully they will hold it til this friday when I pay the taxi to take me to wal-mart.

I know my pharmacy will hold my meds for a week before they put them back on the shelf. They will usually give a 'warning' call telling you that it's going to happen before hand.

You can also get your meds by mail order. You might want to look into that if you have problems getting to the pharmacy.

I get my Keppra XR through the mail order pharmacy. We use to go through Express Scripts, but since July 1st, our insurance changed, and we now go through Prescriptionsolutions.com I paid $150 for a six month supply of Keppra XR through the mail order pharmacy. If I were to go to a local pharmacy, I would have to pay $40 for a month supply, which would equal to $240 for a six month supply if I did it that way. So it saves me $90 by going through the mail order pharmacy. I agree, its a pain to have to wait til the date they say you can reorder. Ive never taken any generic medications when it comes to medications for seizures. Ive always taken name brand.
