Hey guys,

I've had a few breakthrough seizures over the last few days. I've taken a Lorazepam each day, but still have the seizures and sleep a lot. Today, I have a headache over my right eye, which is what usually happens when I'm going to have a few or start my menstrual cycle. I've taken some Tylenol for the headache and am drinking a Coke in case my sugar is low (I've only had water the last few days).

Hey Daroswene, I hope you feel better soon.

Do you tend to get catamenial seizures (ones related to hormonal spikes)? If so you might discuss with your neuro (if you haven't already) treatments that might help. You could also look into an anti-estrogenic diet.

Hi Daroswene,

I always had seizures 5-7 days before and after my cycle and it was a pain for me. My Dr. put me on Diamox Sequels and I had to take that 5 days before my cycle and it helped a little but it didn't stop the seizures completely.
What did help me a lot was using natural progesterone cream which is a cream made up of wild yams and nuts. If you are allergic to either of these don't use it.
What's happening is the progesterone level is dropping during this time and it's progesterone that helps calm the nerves while at the same time the estrogen level is rising and the estrogen causes more excitement and can trigger seizures for some people. Cut back on the carbs and starch foods and stay away from any diet sodas and as Nakamova mentioned be sure to let your neuro know about this. Also keep track of your seizures on a calendar and also write down when you start and stop your cycle by doing this the Dr. will be able to see if there's a pattern and if the hormones changing is what's triggering the seizures. I wish you the best of luck and May God Bless You!

Yes, most of my seizures (not all) are around the time of f my cycle.

I keep track of my seizures through my lupus doctor's app. Cutting carbs will be difficult, but I will try. I don't drink anything diet since my last neurologist said the sweetener in them could cause increased seizures. I'll look into the cream; if it has the same problem as birth control pills (causing blood clots), I won't be able to use it.
