Hi there,

Our 13-year-old diagnosed with severe gluten/wheat/yeast allergies two years ago. While we have eliminated this from her diet, she ended up having gluten at a family member's home, was violently ill the whole night before with diarrhea and wasn't able to eat the next day. She had a full seizure at school the following day. Doctors are still trying to determine the cause but I'm wondering if it's because her body went into shock after consuming gluten that she doesn't normally have. We are seeing the pediatrician in a few days and I'd like to have some anecdotal and clinical evidence to share.

Thanks for your help!!

Hi HBR, welcome to the forum. :hello:

No way to know for sure IMO. So many things can contribute to lowering the seizure threshold. I think that often times, it's not just one thing that causes a seizure, but maybe more "the straw that broke the camels back" sitting on top of a mix of contributing factors.

Lack of sleep from being violently ill, dehydration, etc. could definitely be contributing factors. Stress (whether from not feeling well or from family dynamics in the social scene) can also play a big role.

There is a veterinarian (DogtorJ) who has done a bunch of research on seizures and gluten. He advocates a "G.A.R.D." diet. As far as I know, the diet has not been studied in a clinical setting yet.
