Hello list mates,

My 21 year old is having tonic clonic seizures every 4th week of the month. He had one on 24th November, 23rd December and on 25th January. The one that happened in January was a little bit different. He seemed a little wobbly when he woke up in the morning, and then after breakfast his knees kinda gave out and he fell head long. This happened at about 8:15 in the morning. He took his medication and then had a tonic clonic at 9:20 am.

My suspicion is that the medication or the dosage is causing his seizures.

Because of his underlying autism syndrome, I'm thinking he needs a micro dosage of AED. What is considered a minimum dosage for most adults may be way too much for him. He is on 250 mg of Vimpat and 50 mg of Zonisamide.

Any one have any thoughts/comments on micro dosage?

-Thanks much,
Suman

Hi Suman,

Every 3rd week of the month I have seizures no matter what, I've been on over 10 different seizure meds and I had brain surgery twice to help reduce the seizures but what's causing them is hormones changing each month and nothing can be done about that.
I take 300 mg. of Vimpat a day I was on 400 mg before but it was triggering seizures for me. I've never been on Zonisamide so I can't tell you the correct dosage for an adult.
Have your son try taking vitamin B12 1000 mcg. once a day that did wonders for me and reduced my seizures a lot.
To find the correct med and dosage for your son have his Dr. order a DNA test this test will show the amount of enzymes in the liver along with a persons body chemistry and then the Dr. can match that up to the correct seizure med with the least side effect. I had this done a few yrs. ago and I found out I was drug resistant to all seizure meds out on the market right now.
I'm also wondering if your son might be having a myoclonic seizure, they happen when a person goes to bed or after they have been up for a little while. I had them for a short time but they stopped after my neuro. put me on vimpat. I wish you and your son only the best of luck and May God Bless the Both of You!

Sue

Thanks Sue, yes he did have a myclonic seizure.

I'll pursue the DNA test. Would this be ordered by the neurologist or physician?

-Thanks once again,
Suman

Hi Suman,

My neuro ordered the DNA test but I will tell you a lot of Drs. don't like to do them or will say we don't do these but they aren't telling the truth and the reason why is because they want to keep making money from the drug co. that makes the drugs when they prescribe the med to a person. If for some reason the neuro or family Dr. refuses to do a DNA test tell them that you will report them to the medical conduct board and take my word they will do the test. All they have to do is draw a few tubes of blood and wipe the inside of the mouth with a Q-tip to get some salvia and send it to the lab.
I wish you and your son only the best of luck and May God Bless You Both!

Most people are not poor metabolizers so overall it doesn't make sense for doctors to focus on that right off the top. For some people it is helpful info but that doesn't translate to meaningful info for many.

some concepts/terminology can be mentioned (it does mentionof some numbers regard g poor metabolizers): http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/444804_5

I thinking a few thing is the epilepsy part and parcel of a syndrome because believe me there quite a few of them around.Thing is you can go on for ever trying to find a reason.I carted my daughter all over London in the end my family and doctors put hault to it as I was making everyone ill spent nearly ten years doing that. What do it achieve in the long run you got a name. The second one it just one of them things I would give that a year before I walk that road.third thing medication.Do you do anything anything slightly different at them times do he go to disco or something that changes light levels.I always say look for the simple things firsts by any chance to he suffer constipation

Thank you Hobbes and Seagull.

Hobbes- when you mention metabolism - did you mean to say how the absorbs the medication and then leaves the system? (I'm yet to go through your link).

Seagull - For most part, he's not constipated (he does have a BM once a day). His day is about the same most days. I understand what you say about spending time wisely. It takes time to get a good perspective and right now and I'm inside of things and am trying hard to get that vision. My son can't say much and I feel that I should not give him medications that make him more unhealthy because he can't defend himself.

a lot of medicine is broken down by certain bunch of enzymes in the liver. For each of these the range goes from poor to ultra rapid metabolizer (or similar verbiage). Here's one wikipedia mention to give you some of the concept but I think it leaves a lot to be desired.. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drug_reaction_testing

there are a lot of reasons why meds work or don't work.
