Did a search, couldn't seem to find an exact topic on this..

Ever since my GCSEs about 6 or 7 years ago, I've had an increasing issue with writing and reading on paper (PCs are fine however) and continuously have myoclonic jerks that vary in severity (sometimes I'll just have a quick chill-jerk, other times it will be pretty severe and I'll end up feeling really out of sorts and I'll throw the pen at someone :( )

It's been getting progressively worse to the point I can barely fill in a form these days and it's a bit embarrassing, however my neurologist always dismisses me when I talk about it. I'm a University student and it's ruining my education, how do I make them listen? Also is this a common thing with JME or is it more likely reading epilepsy that I've read about in the past?

Thanks in advance xx

(Bit more background, I was diagnosed with JME at 13 but 23 now and on Topiramate 175MG twice a day)

Hi rhiz,

You may have the same problem I had yrs. ago if and that is you may be photosensitive meaning certain colors are triggering seizures for you. Tell your neuro to do a special e.e.g. on you where the will flash different color strobe lights one at a time by doing this they will be able to see if certain colors are triggering seizures. I found out that flourscent green, amber and bright white like when the sun shines on the snow is what triggers the seizures for me. The only other thing I can think if but I don't know anything about is called "Reading Seizures" which is when a person starts to read for some reason they go into a seizure. If you neuro is refusing to help you out or do any test tell the Dr. you will report him/her to the medical conduct board in your area and take my word they will get moving. Over the 44 yrs. I've had epilepsy I've found seeing an Epileptologist the best thing I ever did these Drs. specialize in epilepsy and know much more about how to treat epilepsy, they have kept me on a lot less med and I was able to have brain surgery to help reduce my seizures. You may want to look into finding one. I wish you the best of luck and May God Bless You!

Just out of curiosity, have you tried writing with your non-dominant hand? That might help.

Hi rhiz,

I forgot to tell you after I had brain surgery my hand writing got really bad and my spelling went down hill and I never had that problem before. My Dr. told me it was all do to the area of my brain that they did surgery and how they couldn't get all the scar tissue out of the right temporal lobe. Here's wishing you well and May God Bless You!
