It was weird... I woke up this morning and felt so dead tired. Like I could have easily slept another night! But after dragging myself out of bed, I went to the kitchen to take my keppra and the rest of the goodies I take each day... :roflmao: And as I got closer to the sink area, I had this weird strong odor come over me. I though my husband forgot to rinse a plate when he ate breakfast this morning. So I checked for a plate that was dirty, but didnt see one. I was going to put dishes into the dishwasher and the smell got stronger. More like a strong garlicy smell... it was just so darn gross that I started gagging and couldnt stop! I tried to breath in and out, but it didnt work. I made it to the bathroom, but what I drank came up. :(

And since then, all day long Ive been smelling things that have been stronger in scent. I dont know what it is? My mom was worried it might have something to do with seizures.. but then I thought about it, and I dont know if during a womans menstral cycle, if the hormones will play apart in things like that, because today would be cycle day 14 for me. **I know all you guys out there wouldnt want to hear this, so I will keep it clean.... **:roflmao: But I did have the ovulation symptoms a few days ago. Like around the 15th/16th.

Maybe its related to that? I have no clue though. Ive never had this months before! Just thought id check here to see if the women here have had this happen and if it could be related to seizures wanting to come on or not?

I had a similar thing last night with sleep - so agitated during the night - very lucid and bizarre dreams - symbology and weird
late morning thru early afternoon I felt like throwing up occasionally
had a few partials and auras pervasive
some day huh

This totally happens to me. Scents are so much stronger prior to my seizures and sometimes post (which is probably just prior since I do cluster sometimes).
It reminds me of when I was pregnant when I'd notice that suddenly everything had an odour. For instance...who knew that burners on your stovetop have a smell when you turn them on? Even when they're clean.
I remember being in the hospital for my seizures and cursing the person who gave me tulips. The smell would get superstrong just prior or pre-ictal or whatever.
Maybe this is becoming part of your aura?
FYI during ovulation and the week before my period begins are my definate triggers. Estrogen is my enemy I think.

Thanks for that info. I will have to look into that more with regards to Ovulation. Ive never experienced what that before ovulation or around ovulation. I get the "pinching" pains that come with ovulation once in awhile, and the usual symptoms, but I thought I was losing it yesterday when I started to smell strong odors. And to top it off, I was gagging and throwing up? It was weired. I havnt had any seizure symptoms. Ive just been feeling tired, headache, and the odor smelling was yesterday. Today Ive been so grumpy, which isnt like me at all. Now I can get that way before a period is to start, but never around ovulation. Plus I broke down this morning in tears! And you know what it was over??? A pair of the kid's shorts! LOL Our middle son wears shorts or jeans with adjustable waiste bands in them, and my husband put the wrong pair on our oldest son, and when I went to get the right pair for our middle son to put on, he was holding onto the adjustable waiste band and it pulled it half way out of the waiste line! LOL I just started to cry my eyes out over it! Kind of freaked me out, thinking back to the only time I got that way was during pregnancy!

I hope that you're having a better day today! I've heard that when you're in your thirties that you can have ovulation bursts that drop more eggs because your body is having a last hurrah before becoming pre-menopausal. Yeah hormones!
Do you think you might be pregnant?
I can always feel rest assured that I am not because after my third I got a tubal ligation.
How do your kids handle you when you're emotional? As boys they must be like "what the heck?"
Oh the joy of being a woman.

I have no clue if Im pregnant. I was thinking back to my last pregnancy, which I found out in March 2006, and I recall having some cramping, and other phsycial changes before finding out. But the sense of smell Ive been having, headaches, and at times I get kind of dizzy, not alot, it happened yesterday after I got up from folding clothes. And after that emotional break down yesterday morning, I didnt know what to think!? Last night I went to bed having some cramping on and off and woke up to it again this morning. So I guess I will just have to wait and see. I do have my appointment for my yearly pap smear scheduled at the end of April. So if this continues and Im not pregnant, I will have to check whats going on with the doc.

And as for my kids, I dont think they really pay attention to my emotional times... :roflmao: they are like their dad... sometimes they dont listen or just not pay attention half the time!

Well the smell stuff continued today, I just made sure to stay away from anything that would bother me. But then I noticed my legs, my upper legs are killing me. I mean to the point where It feels like I ran a marathon and was out of shape for it! I have no idea what is going on with my body. So, Im going to wait it out and see what happens. I spoke with my mom today and she doesnt think it would have to do with seizures. On the good note, I didnt have the headaches Ive been having before. I just felt more tired, and the leg pain came on which for now, Im just going to rest and see if gets better by tomorrow.

Hmmm....interesting development! I must tell you though that whenever I have menstrual cramps and in my first trimesters and during contractions I felt it in my legs. But that's just me! But maybe your uterus is trying to tell you something even if you aren't pregnant. Have you had troubles with cysts before or anything?
Your body is trying to tell you that it's unhappy or changing somehow!
Wow! Crazy.
Could you have been having nocturnal seizures and having muscle soreness and tiredness because of that? Or maybe you really are pregnant? Who knows! I bet you'll know in 2 weeks or so if you are from the sounds of things.
The wondering can drive you batty!

Thats the thing, I havnt done anything Physical to cause the aches in my legs. I havnt had any troubles with cysts or anything. Its kind of driving me nuts. I havnt had any seizures that I know of during the night. The tiredness that Im experiencing started sunday when I woke up. It just felt like I hadnt had any sleep at all. I even tried drinking caffiene to help, which kind of did, but what I thought was weird is that I was in bed by 9pm sunday night, and last night I wanted to watch a movie, but fell asleep by 10pm. Not like me at all. Im a night owl. LOL Well, Id like to be, but Ive been trying to get to sleep earlier so no seizures occur. HMMMMM :ponder:.... How I wish the next 10 or so days would just fly right by! :roflmao:

It really does sound like the early days of pregnancy...holy moly! Are your "ladies" sore or heavy? I've fooled myself into thinking I was pregnant before though so I may not be the best person to think this through with.
If you were... how would that make you feel? Happy? Surprised? Worried for the future or giddy?
I'd be buying early response tests if I were in your shoes. I was notorious for that.
10 days must feel like such a long time away.
Time will tell!

You know, I started thinking back to my last pregnancy symptoms and can recall somethings that seem similar. If I would have ovulated on thursday, Which from all the signs I had, that is when I calculate I did... I cant figure out why I started to feel cramps come and go two days later, that has continued since then, and then with the emotions coming and going.... and as for my "ladies" they feel sore around the edges, like near my armpit area, and last night they felt alittle heavy, but today they seem fine now. So I have no clue was to what the heck is going on. If I did turn out to be pregnant, Id be happy. We already three kids, but if god wanted us to have another, Id take it in a heartbeat. I was just getting use to the idea of having some "alone" time come this august when all three kids will be in full time school! LOL Im due for my next period around 4/1. So I will see what comes up within the time frame til then.

Finally, Someone Gets It!

:e:Kristin, first I want to say thanks for all of your posts- I have had epilepsy for the greater part of my life and never would have dared join a support group, but something in the honesty of all of your postings compelled me to take the leap and join. I, too have Temporal Lobe Epilepsy, and the Simple Partial seizures. I really enjoyed reading your posts regarding your trial on Vimpat. Your experience was an exact mirror of my own. I'm sorry if it sounds like I'm happy about your experience, but as anyone with Epilepsy can attest to, finding someone who "gets" how it feels to have your body betray you is nothing short of miraculous. In reading today's post, I found a similar kinship- I am also very sensitive to the fluctuations of hormonal changes and can't stop seizures or auras around my period. Like clockwork, if stress accompanies the hormonal changes, it's a double whammy. My seizures always happen in the afternoon, which I find very weird too. Have you considered the pros and cons of a pregnancy while on AED's? I think that is an issue that isnt talked about very often, but it's very serious. Anyway, thanks again for your postings.

Hi Hotmamadrama! Welcome to CWE! :)

Im glad you found us and Im glad to share my experiences with you, so you can relate! :)

As for seizures during my time frame of approaching a menstrual cycle, Ive never had any seizure symptoms come about during that time period. The only time I get seizure symptoms is when I dont take my medication on time, or lack of sleep. Im a mom of three little boys, so Ive taken into consideration the pros and cons of what can happen with pregnancy while on seizure medications. During all of my pregnancies, I was monitered carefully by a OB GYN, Primary Care dr, and Neurologist. All my pregnancies turned out fine and I had healthy babies. I was on two different seizure medications during all of them, where as now Im only on one.

Hi.
My seizure trigger is my hormone fluctuations, also.
My neurologist always tells me not to get pregnant while I'm on my current medications. He tells me this every time I have my 6-month check-up appointment. I know women have had healthy children while being on Keppra during pregnancy. But I hear Tegretol is a real no-no. I'm taking Tegretol, Keppra, and Lamictal right now, and I'd like to begin coming off the Tegretol because I'd really like to have kids someday.
Kristin, what meds were you on during your pregnancies?

I was on Keppra, and Carbatrol for seizure medications when I was pregnant with our boys. I actually was close to 12 weeks before finding out I was pregnant with our first. When I did find out, I went straight to my neurologist, who said not to get off the seizure medications because it will cause more trouble during the pregnancy than what he wanted to have happen. So I stayed on both medications, and went to my OB who told me to take more folic acid than usual, which I did. Everything turned out fine. I kept asking my drs over and over if things were going be alright. I was worried about birth defects and they all said things would be ok. I did go to see a specialist that delt with birth defects of infants and he monitered me through out my first pregnancy and everything turned out fine. Once I got pregnant with our second baby, they monitered me, but not as close as they did with my first pregnancy. All came out healthy and fine. To this day, I see a dr who I go to for my yearly exams and she said she see's tons of women come in with health issues and get pregnant, a large majority of them turn out with healthy babies. So none of my drs had any concerns about my medications and the babies not being ok. As long as I took the extra amount of Folic acid, things turned out ok. :)

Well, I dont think it has anything to do with seizures now. Ive been so tired since sunday I just cant take this no longer! Ive been going to sleep early at nights, waking up to take the kids to school, and coming home to sleep for 3-4 more hours! I wish the days would just go by so fast. Im moody, and even my husband noticed. LOL Anyways, I just wanted to give you an update. So far, Im just hanging in there and waiting to see if it has anything to do with this month's cycle. Maybe its a hormone inbalance? Who Knows... Anyways, I gotta hit the bed before I fall asleep here typing! Night Everyone!

Good luck with the sleepies! It must be hard to function and be bright and chipper. I don't blame for being moody with the way you have been feeling!
I'll be thinking about you around April Fools day to see if it brings a happy surprise or just more sleepy zzzzzz's.

:roflmao: Yeah wouldnt that be something... Im due for my period on april fools day, and what if it turned out I was pregnant! Holy smokes, my husband may think its a april fools joke! :roflmao: Im not too worried. What will be, will be. I went looking up hormone imabalances and couldnt find any symptoms to relate to what Im having. So maybe my body is changing or something? Who knows.... :ponder:

Sorry Ive been missing for awhile... With the kid's Spring Break, and all, its been so busy around here! Well my period is due today.... still nothing..... just waiting it out. I dont know if the sensitive smells were related to possibly being pregnant, or what. But since then. Ive had a few other symptoms. But Im waiting it out to see what happens in the next couple of days.

Sorry I posted on an old thread....I really should pay closer attention to those dates!
I'll still be thinking about you over the next few days. Keep us up to date (if you like!)
