I agree with everyone. You never know how you are going to react to any one drug until you try it. And different people have a different willingness to tolerate any given side effect. It just depends on the person and what their priorities are.
I've been through the wringer with most of the ones I've tried:
Gabapentin - was on a low dose for nerve pain. Didn't prevent seizures.
Keppra - rash, exhausted, mood swings to the extreme, doing too much of EVERYTHING (it made my "off" switch permanently "on") and something else I can't remember
Topamax - severe depression
Trileptal - rash, severe depression, arthritis-like joints, headaches, exhaustion and sleeping all the time, mental confusion, plus a host of other stuff
Now I'm on Lamictal. This is the second time we are trying it. The first time I got a rash and the doc took me off of it cold turky. This second time I tried it I ramped up slowly to avoid the rash. I got up to 300mg, but I had a bad headache, dizziness, blurry eyes that went double sometimes, rapid mood swings, and feeling like I was on speed. I could feel the blood running through my legs and I was jumpy like crazy. Ugh. The doc dropped me down to 200mg and I feel better, but seizures aren't under control at 200mg. At 300 I think they were, but wasn't on it long enough to tell for sure.
The good news is on Lamictal I can think! And I'm not so tired all the time. Wahoo! That alone makes Lamictal a winner for me! I want to stick with it.
