Hi everyone, I'm new here. This site is great and seems really supportive. I need some help with my newly diagnosed EP please.

I was diagnosed with simple partials a week ago. I basically had 2 1/2 days of non stop seizures whilst in hospital. My face droops and the facial spasms I experienced were really really intense! Some of these lasted a few minutes, some half an hour. I was exhausted! I must have had at least a hundred of these. I've just started on Lamictal. What I want to ask is. A month ago I experienced a full body spasm. I was conscious throughout. Both my arms stiffened and extended out, my mouth grimaced and I felt a really intense 'whoosh' of tingling go down both of my legs which were fidgeting at the same time. This lasted a few minutes and was the most horrible thing I've experienced. Again, I was in hospital at the time. The Docs put this down to a panic attack?! Yeah right..I wasn't stressed beforehand. Was this a type of seizure also?

Thanks

Hello and welcome to CWE. I hope the Lamictal helps control things. I've been on a number of different meds in the past 30is years of having epilepsy, and Lamictal has been the best so far at seizure control and mild side-effects. I still have a couple of hundred complex partial seizures a year, but no tonic-clonic ones. (For the most part. I did have one a couple of years ago but we had been adjusting my med dose and got it too low.)

It sure sounds like what you had was a seizure of some sort. It definitely does NOT sound like a panic attack. I was a social worker and counselor for a number of years and dealt with a lot of people who had panic attacks, and none of them were like what you described.

My final piece of wisdom for this post is to get yourself seen by an epileptologist, not just a neurologist. You need someone who really understands a lot about epilepsy, and in my experience very few neurologists have adequate experience or training.

Best of luck!

Onward and upward!

How were you diagnosed with SPs? Did you have a positive EEG? If the others were diagnosed as simple partials, I can't imagine why they would decide the last one was a panic attack. It totally sounds like a simple partial to me. That is most confusing.

Thank you for the speedy replies and warm welcome. I had an EEG a year a ago which didn't show anything. I have a history of a head injury years ago and I started to have blackouts about a year ago and then the migraines started. I've been on Topamax a while. I had the mild face droops since March which the Docs thought were strokes and in hospital I had that full body spasm and subsequently I've had even more face droops and the facial super spasms which the Docs said were partial seizures. I'm under a Neuro anyway and I'm awaiting another appointment. I have to say though, I'm pretty laid back apart from when the Doctors tell me that I'm stressed when I know full well Im not! That annoys me.

hello and welcome to CWE

your simple partials sound a little like mine where you are conscious and its intense but my neuro has never said its an axiety attack he said its a sz.I have jerking in my arms and legs not tingling.

I would wake up grimacing pretty often at night. Sometimes shaking or punching or kicking. Sometimes i was aware and sometimes not. Even though there was no abnormality on the EEG, the neurologist said it was a simple partial, or as he called it, an aura.

Welcome to CWE, Angelita14.
