Im having one in the middle of the month, the pamphlet for it says to take my regular meds, but Im wondering if I allready take some AED's wont that interfere with the EEG? I dont think my neurologist is taking my possible seizure seriously, in his opinion I didnt have one, though he didnt say just what happened to me. Im wondering should I not take my meds then? If in his opinion I dont have a seizure disorder then I suppose I should be ok skipping a few doses? I only take them for Essential Tremors, and I have missed doses in the past, it just makes me real shaky, and sometimes I jerk a bit more.

Please follow your doctor's orders. Sleep deprivation is the only factor they want to see in this test.

I recently had 2 sleep studies. One was done without a breathing device used to assist in breathing (picks up sleep apnea). Once apnea was discovered, then the 2nd test was done WITH the breathing device assisting in breathing.

It may be specific to see how you are with medication. Maybe another test will follow this one.

You need to ask your physician or the EEG tech, but if it is just a normal EEG with sleep deprivation, you will most likely take your full dose of medication.

Things you should know

As per everyone's postings:

1) The Doctor should advise beforehand if you
should or should not take your medications

2) The EEG Tech would not know if you are
supposed to take your medication or not, but
they will ask you if you did.

I would strongly advise you to pick up the
phone and call the Office before this is done
and find out ASAP if you are to take your
meds as scheduled or not.

I have had sleep deprived EEG's both ways:

  • 1) If you are having a sleep deprived EEG you should
not be driving (if you are permitted to drive), someone
    should take you
  • 2) If you are being instructed not to take your medications
until after the EEG is performed, then bring your meds
with you and take them after the EEG and get back
on schedule or inquire the office as how your schedule
    should be for that day.
  • 3) To stay awake for the sleep deprived EEG, if you
have a washer and dryer - Do your laundry! It will keep
you awake and from being "bored", and if you are alone,
then clean something (the bathroom, kitchen, etc) lightly
but the point here is to keep you awake, not to a point
of being exhausted. Having all the lights on in the house
also keeps you awake. Avoid caffeine or anything that
has caffeine (easier said that done if you are into it).
  • 4) If you begin to feel sluggish, do not sit down to rest
or you will fall asleep. Instead sit on the floor and do
some simple exercise. Even taking a washcloth with
cool water and washing yourself down (your face, arms,
legs) actually will bring some life back to you.

By this time, you're about to "zone out to snooze cruise"
when your ride is ready to pick you up for the Sleep
Deprived EEG.

after

I had a sleepdeprived EEG a few months ago.I am a total sleepy head, so my lovely fiance stayed awake with me. I did everything my doc told me- took my meds as usual.

It is a stressful and emotional thing to go through, so you should make the most of it. Me and my fiance went to the zoo afterwardsand tried not to think about the EEG, just had an excuse of having a day of work :-):agree:

I've had probably 10 EEGs and the first one was when i was 6 for absence seizures, then one when I was 15 the a few now that i'm back in treatment for complex partial seizures.
I stayed awake 24 hours thinking that that particular EEG about two years ago was a sleep-deprived one but it wasn't! They just wanted a baseline EEG I guess but they took the fact that I was lacking sleep into acount. They told me that it was not mentioned that it was supposed to be a sleep deprived EEG and I responded with "I had EEGs when I was little and those I had to stay up for.. i didnt know." Then after that then next set of EEGs i knew just to take my meds regular and to sleep regular but never slept through an EEG.

If the EEG is regular or not sleep-deprived then sleep regular, and take your meds like normal. They are not looking for if you took ur meds or not- they will ask you if you took them and write that down if you havn't. If they see anything on the EEG that is unusual they might have to consider that you didn't take your meds right or at all..

Good luck on your EEG and let us know how it went.
Take care and be safe :)

Had the EEG done the other day, I seriously doubt anything will be found on it, I didnt feel anything but tired and sleepy. I asked the tech if there were any spikes or peak he just kinda laughed and said no. While its somewaht a good thing it still gives me no answers of course Im jumping the gun here i wont know the full results till next week when I see my Neuro. And I did take my meds and followed all directions.

It is not unusual to even get a "normal" EEG
report just so that you will know, sometimes
it takes several tries to capture anything.

We can't create anything like we can with a
remote control to a TV set - although it would
be awfully nice if we could click a seizure on
command and get it over with....

It sure would spare us the trouble of all those
video EEG's and hoards of trips for EEG's.

*sigh*

Had to throw some humor in there ....

Hang in there!

Thanks Brain

I guess I kinda get myself worked up over this Im stressed out over not knowing exactly whats been going on with me, and kinda pissed off at my Neurologist who seemed to be completely uninterested in the possible seizure, he didnt even ask me any questions about it just took what ever info I gave to his to little med student helpers and said "I dont think you had a seizure" and moved on to how my tremors were doing, it was unsettling. He never explained just what the hell he thought did happen to me, and I guess thats my fault for running out of there so fast without standing up for myself and asking just what heck do you think happened. For some reason Im intimidated by doctors and I hate going to hospitals or clinics.

The next time I go though Im going to have my stuff organized and written down, from the time I felt brain zaps for 3 weeks from going off of paxil 8 years ago to everything that happening now.

...I hate going to hospitals or clinics

Can you name one person in here that
LOVES to go to the hospitals or clinics?

Not I, sayeth Brainy!

:paperbag:

I seriously doubt there is actually ONE
individual who enjoys any of this!
