I'm having a sleep deprived EEG next week. I've been told that I have to stay awake until 1am and then they will wake me at 4am. My question is..how do they keep you awake? I have visions of a nurse coming in and poking me with a stick every ten minutes..

I've done an EEG a couple different ways before, so I think it varies. Once, I was alone at a sleep center and they watched me on camera and talked to me through a microphone if I was awake or asleep at the wrong times (creepy!). Another time, I was young and with my mom at the hospital and she kept me awake, but yes the nurses checked in every so often (not sure how often). I hope that was somewhat helpful...maybe they will just poke their heads in once in awhile and call out to you to make sure you are awake? I don't recall being poked with a stick, but maybe I blocked it out! ;)

Will you be in the hospital for the day/evening before the EEG? That is unusual. Typically the doctors leave you on your own (at home or in a hotel or whatever) to stay awake the night before, and then you show up when it is test time. At least that is how it is around here.
But, whether you are in the hospital or not it's generally not too hard to stay awake. Bring a friend/family member to talk to and help keep you awake, have planned activities, watch tv, have caffeine the day before if you are permitted, get up an exercise frequently to keep the blood flowing, have quick cool showers or at least wash your face in cool water. You get the idea.

They want me to be in the hospital for 48 hours before the EEG.

They use cattle prods to keep us awake. :roflmao: and if that does not work they threaten you with staying longer.

Nah. That's old school. Now they send in the really good looking young male nurse to give you a sponge bath. <Let's see what that does to her brain waves.>

Thanks AlohaBird forgot about the nurses, that will get the brain waves moving.:roflmao:

The upstairs neighbors always seem to do a great job of keeping me awake. Maybe they will come to the hospital...

When I have helped my daughter do this we found funny video clips worked really well BC the laughing tends to keep you more awake. We just used you tube.

I've done my share of sleep deprived EEG's.

I was told to stay awake at home and than when I went to the doc they hooked me up to the EEG. I was never in the hospital the night before the sleep deprived EEG.

I have more art supplies and books packed than clothes...
To make matters worse, since being on a higher dose of Lamictal I'm sleepier than ever.
I'm liking the sound of the hot male nurse.. I'll ask, see what they say lol

So no plans to reduce the medication? I had been wondering if that is why you will be in the hospital for 2 days before the EEG even takes place, but I guess not.
Good luck with everything!

The sleep deprivation only works if they actually let you sleep during the EEG--when I had my last one, there was a tech right next to me typing loudly the whole time. Every time I started to drift off she'd start a spate of loud typing. Naturally, my EEG report said "deep sleep not attained." I wonder why? :-) I watched thrillers/suspenseful movies--the 'edge of your seat' factor kept me awake!
