Everyone w/E,
I have done research on how sleep deprivation can affect E. I have found some studies where they had some people in the study who had E, and they found out that that sleep deprivation had been the MAIN cause of the seizures for some of the people. Treating the sleep deprivation problem led to fewer and in some cases, full control of those seizures.
This type of seizures were happening because of the sleep deprivation and NOT problems in the wiring of the person's brain.
This is why those study leaders have suggested that anyone who has or had E, should have a Sleep Study Analysis done.
I know that I had a severe case of sleep apnea. I had never realized this, but when I was prescribed a Cpap machine after my Analysis, and started using it, I had a big drop in any type of sensory problems that I had before using the Cpap machine!

I'm gonna be 60, and I've noticed as I'm getting older...I feel better with less sleep. I feel the best with about 4 hours of sleep. If I sleep too much, I feel like crap the rest of the day.

its my main cause. When i start to get deprived is when things happen.

Ive had 3 sleep studies, ive been on sleeping meds for 17yrs. I take a lot of sleeping meds.

Hi AC,

Often I would feel exhausted after having 6 or more hrs. of sleep each night and that triggered sz. for me. I had a sleep study done and my Epi found I was having sz. in my sleep 1-2 hrs. before I woke up in the morning, this is the main reason I felt exhausted for most of the day. If your Dr. does a sleep study make sure a e.e.g. is done at the same time. I wish you the best of luck and May God Bless You!

I've had a few nocturnal TC seizures in my life. I've been in the hospital undergoing the testing for surgery and had seizures in my sleep on video. Then another time, my epileptologist did a sleep study, and I had no seizures that night. With all the seizure meds I take, I need lots of sleep.
And yes, lack of sleep can cause seizures for some folks;

Why does sleep deprivation provoke seizures?
Sleep can affect seizures in many different ways. During normal sleep-wake cycles, changes in the brain’s electrical and hormonal activity occur. These changes can be related to why some people have more seizures during sleep than others, and why not getting enough sleep can trigger seizures. Some people’s seizures are tied very closely with their sleep. They may have all of their seizures while sleeping, when falling asleep or waking up. For others, sleep may not be a common trigger, or the association is less clear. For example not getting enough sleep may trigger seizures only when other triggers are going on too.
