GDAY ! The doc recon`s that i have temporal lobe epilepsy also possibly a benign tumor , for a while i have been smelling a smokey bbq smell when there isn't a thing there to cause it ? i have read about this on the net and i am wondering should i see my doc ( i have just got my downgraded to a car license back and " bugger " if i want to say something and run the risk of losing that ) what should i do ?

I have TLE and with some of my auras I'm smell campfire or cigarettes... ushually campfire, which is annoying in the winter when everyone has their fireplace burning.

I just realized how literal of a word fireplace is. That is like calling a bed, sleep-place or a toilet.......

Hey p-funk it could be worse ! at least mine seems to smell ok i like having a bbq , do you have grand mal siezures ect after having the aura ?

Man, you're lucky! I smell poop :( lol For the longest time I razzed my daughter for being rude until I finally figured out my auras. Sorry about having to risk your license and I hope your meds get a handle on them soon.

I smell this ALL the time! I didn't think I get auras, and I think I have this smell a lot without being sure i have had or will have a seizure. I'm entirely new to epilepsy and have only had 2 seizures i've been aware of afterwards. But my neurologist said that he didn't think the smell was connected and there's a lot on the internet about it but that he's sceptical of the connection.

do you have grand mal siezures ect after having the aura ?

Before I was on medication I was having all types of auras the smoke smell included. Occasionally one of those would lead to a grand mal. Now my meds can keep things under control for the most part. I still get auras occasionally but they are short lived. I will say the brain can make you experience some amazing things.

I am on tegratol and havn`t had a siezure for approx 8 mths but i have just recently been getting this smell and i was wondering if that was all i was going to get or do siezures follow ? the smell only lasts 30sec to a few min .

I would often smell something burning during the nighttime. I guess I could compare it to burning fire. At times it was really hard to place the smell, but it was familiar. I haven't had that for a long time, but when it happened I usually felt pretty off.

I think nothing happened after the auras (I assume it was an aura) because my seizures were under pretty good control.

To bad we can't smell something really nice!

Right? I told my neuro that once...."Why can't I, just for once, smell roses or cinnamon/vanilla scented candle instead of feces and body odor?" She just looked at me perplexed and said "Sorry, can't help ya there..." HAHA

I believe that by smelling something unsavoury it is our brain's way of telling us to be aware that something is not quite right. Let's face it, who would go to the doctor if we were smelling chocolate, coffee or bread baking in the oven on a regular basis. I know that I wouldn't want to take my meds lol. My brain likes to dish out a smell of rotting flowers or a sweet sickly chemical smell.
