My six year old Son was just diagnosed with Generalized Epilepsy. Can anyone fill me in on what might be the worst case scenario? Does Epilepsy ever cause death? Ive been searching the web but would love some input. Also, they just put him on generic Keppra.

Any thoughts welcome

Pcat Magoo -
YES, seizure can cause death.
My daughter has generalized seizures, and she is med free. We went the route of meds and the four caused terrible unacceptable side effects.

We have found better results by making nutritional changes. Healing from the inside out. Finding out WHY she is having seizures rather than putting a bandaid on the symptoms.

Do I worry. YES, however I worried more when she was on anticonvulsants than now when we are working to find out why her body is out of balance.
Her dad wants a magic pill.

YES, it

is possible to die from E. It is called SUDEP. However, with good nutrition, sometimes meds, and other alternative forms, it is possible to avoid it, and lead a very healthy, nearly normal life.

There are some on here who have lost friends/family members to SUDEP. Or who have nearly lost their lives to SUDEP themselves. They will show up, don't worry.

Take care.

Welcome

There are a lot of parents here who are very concerned about their kids. Check out the nursery if you haven't already. The parents there are extremely supportive (like everyone else here)

I don't have any kids (I'm the one with epilepsy) but if I can make a suggestion, always be aware of all the possibilities that can happen but don't expect the worst. Thinking that way can increase your stress levels so unnecessarily.

Hello ...

Our daughter, 13 was diagnosed with Generalized Epilepsy in October 2008
and was also placed on Keppra.

Our worst case scenerio was that Keppra did not control her seizures and the MD misdiagnosed the type of epilepsy she had. We got a second opinion and also the right diagnosis. Getting the right diagnosis turned out to be the most important component to her seizure control.

It would be my suggestion to most throughly discuss your what do we do if ... list with your epi or MD.

I keep a excel spreadsheet journal of what I observe regarding my daughters seizures, mood, tiredness, nutrition, etc. I also write down everything our epi says, and instructs us to do. My epi loves it. Keeping a detailed journal turned out to be a very important resource for me. As well as this site!

In case of a seizure lasting more than 3 minutes, I keep a Diastat rectal gel on hand.

I hope our experiences have helped you in some way.
