Hey: I can't really come up with any research that would give me an answer to stomach pains and E. I was just curious to know if anyone else has ever had stomach pains that they assumed could be related?

I find that after my seizures I have incredible stomach pain that lasts for a couple of hours and it almost takes my breath away.

I'm not taking any E medication right now, but I do take Naproxen (375mg) for chronic back pain (spine deformity).

I have my next appointment on the 27th and was hoping to have some information to give her instead of just "I have pain" lol

Thanks guys!

Some of the threads concerning the gut-brain connection might be of use to you. Personally, I know that when I have stomach discomfort, like when my acid pumps seem to be stuck in the on position, or even if I have a somewhat too acidic stomach, I am more prone to seizures. The seizures however do not create stomach pain for me. If anything, my seizures are preceded by stomach discomfort, not necessarily followed by it.

The stomach has many nerve endings whose signals travel to the brain. I'd recommend doing a search simply on nerve pain in stomach, and go from there. There may be an abnormal feedback loop going on here between the brain and the stomach.

I try to manage my stomach discomfort by focusing on minerals which have an electron to give, to bind to the chloride ions (Hydrochloric Acid) in the stomach. The OTC antacids have these minerals like calcium and magnesium. They increase the pH in the stomach so it is more alkali. I use sodium bicarbonate in extreme cases. My stomach goes through cycles, it seems. Some sources suggest the lining of the stomach is replaced every five to seven days, from what I have read, which I think, is a good thing.

It does not really sound exactly like you have a pH problem though. It is only a possibility.

It could be deferred pain from your back. Or, if your back twists or tenses up during a seizure then perhaps your stomach muscles or even your internal organs are being tensed and kind of twisted as well, even without you realizing it.

Could be anything my friend...from physical to psychological to even spiritual...it's all connected...I suggest getting advice from
a qualified professional you feel comfortable with...best wishes :)

Yes stomach pains suck...especially when BLEH!!! or PRRRT!!! is involved...

MichaelJ07 - it's interesting that you point out that the stomach sheds every 5-7 days. I do not think it's pH related either, but I will most definitely try some antacids - just to rule anything out. Thinking of it now, it makes sense that the stomach has nerve receptors throughout it, otherwise how would we tell if we were full :) I like your scientific way of thinking!

masterjen - I do tense up quite a bit during the seizures, quite often my back pain is more severe for the couple days after. I don't think it would be deferred pain, it feels like someone is stabbing me almost. It's like a stitch when you've run too hard, but instead of being able to stretch it out it just sits there! As I was reading your post I thought of the phrase "stomach is in knots" I guess there's some validity to that.

MrE - I do have a doctors appointment next Wednesday (27th) but I hate going in there saying "this hurts... why" I like giving her a starting point of what it "might be" and let her go from there?

I suggest you find a qualified professional you feel comfortable with...I never said anything about a "doctor"...there is a huge red flag when you even have to mention the word "hate" when it comes to putting your overall health in the hands of someone you trust completely with your life...

Fear in what we don't understand is a natural human characteristic but so is faith in a higher power :)

MrE, you are a wise one. I do completely trust my doctor, and I do get what you're saying with talking to someone else about issues.

What kind of a qualified professional are you thinking of? The reading in between the lines part of my brain capacity aren't working properly right now.

Like I said anybody you feel comfortable with and trust completely with your life...for me that is God...

Ask and you shall recieve :)

Does this happen before, during or after you go to the bathroom?

I don't know if you have solid or runny stool. I have runny stool and my neuro said it's due to my meds. I know when I need to go, either #1 or #2, I'll get stomach cramps until I'm able to go to the bathroom. Once I do go they usually go away. Sometimes when I have to push to get it out I'll get them also. If you have solid stool and are constipated you might have to push harder which could cause them.

I had very bad back problems a few years ago, two herniated discs that were almost bone on bone, sometimes when I sat on the toilet it would hurt my back at times my legs too. I know if I had to do any pushing then that would hurt my back pretty good too. I'm not sure if it would hurt my stomach. In general if I moved the wrong way, sat down, stood up, bent over and just about everything else I'd get horrible pain in my back, side, leg and even my foot sometimes. This did last for hours at times and stay all in the same place on my body. It might be your back problems that has something to do with it?

Sorry if all that was too graphic.

hmm... okay. Thank you!

Sorry if it that wasn't the answer you were looking for but such as life...we don't always get the answers we want my friend...but we always get the answers we need...

Keep your head up...it's very easy to talk to someone but it's another thing to listen :)

I didn't say that it was the wrong answer, or the one that I was not wanting that answer. It's always great to expand your horizons. I very much appreciate your ways of dealing with things, and I have not been able to control my E the scientific way, so this is the PERFECT alternative that I was looking for.

I don't think there's a correlation with being able to go to the washroom or not. I don't usually have problems, except with I take the T3s. I do know what you're talking about though, I just call them poop cramps, but I find that those are more lower in the abdomen. The pain that I'm feeling is a little higher, almost by my ribs.

I've started researching deferred pain and nerve issues - and I'm finding that the nerves that would be pinched with my back issue, would cause pain on the medial (outside) side of the knee, which makes sense. I do run, hike, bike and ski a lot and that's been a dull constant ache that never really goes away, and I just deal with that pain regularly. I find that cold therapy really helps.

I find that with this stomach pain that I'm having, it's internal where cold/heat won't help and pain killers/anti-inflammatories don't touch it either. I'm almost wondering if it's some neuron firing in my brain telling me there's pain - like a ghost. I've never quite had a pain that pain killers won't fix lol

Your stomach pain is still a head scratcher to me. Amputees have ghost sensations sometimes where damaged nerves get stuck in a feeback loop.

Well, that's where I got stuck on my research last night too. I'm wondering if it's the same idea, because of something that I've done unknowingly...

Naproxen does have a lot of side effects related to stomach pain and discomfort. It may not be a primary cause, but it could be making things worse...
