Hey All - Our daughter (18) has cluster seizures before her period (catamenial epilepsy). We’ve tried many treatments and nothing worked - until now.
DD has TLE with visual/spatial auras - she does NOT have smell auras. I had read that waving jasmine essential oil under the nose during an aura will stop a seizure. The person does not need to actively smell it, just breathing the smell in, works. Anyway, every single time we’ve used the jasmine during an aura/as soon as a seizure onset, we’ve completely stopped the seizures - including grand mals! There are essential oil bracelets you can buy to put a drop of jasmine into to wear during the day, and when an episode is coming on, you can also just smell your bracelet. DD smells the oil even just to calm her brain down during the day.
Incidentally, for centuries in impoverished areas, people would routinely smell the sole of their shoes when an aura was happening. When we don’t happen to have jasmine handy, we’ve tried the “smelling the sole” trick and it’s stopped the seizures too!
I wanted to share this as it’s an exciting discovery since our daughter has drug resistant epilepsy and a form of pyridoxine dependent epilepsy with the monthly hormonal seizures that have been difficult. To have something that consistently stops seizures and is easy and affordable is a God send!
Hope this info can help others!
