I found a new app that will recognize any bird that you can hear. It’s called Merlin and it’s free. It lets you keep track of where you are and what birds are singing.

A inspirational quote from Thoreau:
Each new year is a surprise to us. We find that we had virtually forgotten the note of each bird, and when we hear it again it is remembered like a dream, reminding us of a previous state of existence. How happens it that the associations it awakens are always pleasing, never saddening; reminiscences of our sanest hours ? The voice of nature is always encouraging.

Nice. I've been using a free app for a few months now that records ambient noise levels (decibels) as I walk around. It maps my walks and encourages me to explore new territory. I've probably walked about 80% of the public pavement in my city now.

Merlin sounds great. I love watching birds. I have 2 birdfeeders that I keep filled year-round. We mostly get sparrows, robins, & mourning doves in our yard. Sometimes we'll see cardinals and blue jays are even more rare.

I was watching tv last night and heard an owl outside. I got up and stuck my phone out the door.
Added a Great Horned Owl to my list.

I dunno. I went to my friends' house and their kids were watching tv. I said this is the ultimate test! So I opened the app and tested it. It said Woody Woodpecker was Donald Duck. 😔:sneaky:

I’m up to 34 species of birds. Audio captured and saw a Belted Kingfisher the other day.

Year before last, a mourning dove laid eggs in a nest that's on top of an old hose reel/cover on our home. When they hatched, the mom kept bringing the baby birds under the lilac bushes near our deck for such a long time!!
Earlier this spring, the mourning dove had laid 3 eggs in the same nest, but I feel it may have been too early in the season, because unfortunately I saw 1 dead baby bird on the ground. Hopefully, she'll come back to lay more again.
