hi everyone. my husband, who takes tegretol, broke both of his elbows (bicycle accident). integrative doctors say that acetaminophen is better as a painkiller for broken bones bc it does not interfere with the healing process, and that ibuprofen should be avoided. the pharmacist said that both ibuprofen and acetiminophen go through the liver, as does tegretol, and could cause interactions. happy to have any recommendations for an over the counter pain killer.
(ps for one year husband has a rash on his stomach. big dark red spots. no pain. no itching. no stomach aches. i presume it is a side effect of the tegretol. the neurologist said he can go to the dermatologist but as i understand it, dermatologists usually just prescribe more medicine and do not try to understand what is causing the reaction. the only thing that really matters is if the rash is symptomatic of a bigger problem? also happy to hear any thoughts on this)
thanks all & warm wishes to y'all.

Ouch! Sounds painful. :(

What does his neurologist recommend? Both ibuprofen and acetaminophen are okay to take with Tegretol. The acetaminophen does pose a moderate risk to the liver but only if he takes it in excessive doses over an extended period.

He might try eating a lot of pineapple. It contains bromelain which can reduce inflammation and muscle soreness, and aid in wound healing.

The rash may be unrelated to the Tegretol, which is why a dermatologist could be helpful. Not all derm doctors are drug-dealers, some actually want to get at the heart of what's going on! One possibility might be cherry angiomas: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cherry_hemangioma
