The Effects of Clostridia Bacteria Metabolism on Gastrointestinal Function and Mental Health and Neurotransmitter Balance

From Great Plains Laboratory newsletter today:

Although dysbiosis or abnormal microbial overgrowth of the
gastrointestinal tract has long been suspected of causing psychiatric
disorders, the exact mechanism was unknown. For the first time,
William Shaw Ph.D. presents convincing evidence that certain
Clostridia bacteria produce phenolic metabolites that dramatically
alter the conversion of dopamine to norepinephrine, leading to
profound dopamine excess and severe depletion of norepinephrine
and epinephrine in the brain, peripheral sympathetic nervous system
and adrenal glands. Furthermore, the excess dopamine leads to
oxidative stress that can result in permanent damage to the brain,
sympathetic nervous system, and adrenal glands if not treated. He
will present a variety of case studies of patients with autism,
depression, schizophrenia, and other neuropsychiatric disorders
showing the usefulness of urine organic acid testing in the diagnosis
and treatment of these disorders.

also in the news....

As it turns out, dysbiosis is a quacky concept promoted by alternative medicine industry. Dysbiosis is not recognized by mainstream medical expert.

William Shaw, Ph.D., who runs the Great Plains Laboratory, reported that the child had elevated levels of yeast by-products, indicating a "yeast/fungal overgrowth of the gastrointestinal tract." Dr. Shaw says such yeast infections cause autism.

Even giving Dr. Shaw's theory the benefit of doubt, the bacteria found on the Playtex cup was not the same kind that was found in the child.

Though these "experts" have no credible evidence that "dysbiosis" or yeast cause autism, they exploit the circumstances of autism.

There are dozen's of case studies and reports in medical journals of VIRAL infections (including, but not limited to, rotovirus) of the gut triggering seizures in young children (who don't have epilepsy) -- even very mild infections that don't cause dehydration or electrolyte imbalance.

"rotavirus has been shown to infect and replicate within neurons, and viral proteins such as NSP4 have been identified in dendritic processes.18 NSP4 has been shown to stimulate intracellular calcium mobilization in infected gastrointestinal epithelial
cells.19 Calcium dysregulation causes cytolysis in gastrointestinal cells, and NSP4-induced calcium channel fluctuations may result in neurotoxicity and neurotransmitter dysregulation."

"Some studies have suggested that common peptide hormones between the brain and the gastrointestinal tract, associated with spontaneous electrical epileptogenic activity and lowered seizure threshold in some adults, may be a contributing factor to the occurrence of afebrile convulsions during gastroenteritis.[14] Carnitine concentrations in CSF, usually 10% of that in the serum, are increased 2 to 3-fold in some reported cases, suggesting blood-brain barrier damage resulting in increased blood-brain barrier permeability and CNS carnitine accumulation"
