I know that topimirate can be anywhere from 80-120 percent strength of brand name of topamax but does anyone know what the typical strength is? Because I'm on 1000 mg of keppra, 600 mg of lamictal, and was on 400 mg of topamax a day but neurologist is weening me down to 350 mg of topamax a day but i don't want the 80 percent strength because it will be less than 350 mg of course.

With the generics, there's no way to know for sure between different batches/manufacturers, but if you are working off the same bottle of pills, they should be consistent within that bottle. If you're straddling two different bottles, it might be trickier. In general though, the risk depends how sensitive you are to minor changes in dosage or timing. For me the generic hasn't been a problem. If you think it will be a problem for you, ask your doctor to specify brand-only when prescribing. If there's a cost issue with using the brand, you might need to cross your fingers and hope that you aren't sensitive to any inconsistencies in the generic form. You could ask the pharmacy to try and purchase from the same manufacturer for the generic each time, but they may not have a lot of control over that.

Let us know how it goes!

thanks so much. yeah i would hope not. my neuro said though that being on three strong anti-convulstants, dropping one, no matter what shouldn't cause any problems. so here's hoping.

Fingers-crossed! Let us know how you are feeling as you taper down.
