My flatmate informed me yesterday that instead of moving out in March when her lease expires and we agreed I would take it on, she's moving out now (she was packing as she told me). She asked me to pay half the rent which is $100 more than I'm paying now as I rent a room off her. When I said I couldn't afford it, she said that as she can move in with her boyfriend now and save $2500, if I couldn't take on the lease now instead of in March, she would ask the real estate to put the place back on the market. In the current market, it would be gone within a week! So I have no choice but to pay half the rent till her lease expires, then the full $400 until my friends return from Canada and move in with me. Luckily its my best mate and her boyfriend returning and she has promised they will start paying their share of rent before they get home if it means we can all secure a house. It is so hard to find a rental here that its worth their while. People are offering 6months rent upfront to secure one! Can you imagine it? "Hi, me and my jack russell would like to move in. I'm a uni student with sporadic casual work when I'm well enough, and my mystery friends can't be here because they are in another country. Yes that was my mum who dropped me off" LOL!

On top of that I've applied for a fantastic permanent part time job that is in my chosen field of counselling. I could finish off my last 4 units of my degree and actually start earning a decent wage again, with plenty of opportunity to transfer to a full time position within the company. The only catch is it's 2hrs 10mins away by public transport! I'm aiming to have my license back by June so lets hope I can make that happen, get the job, buy a cheap car and finally get some stability!

On the upside my current flatmate is happy for me to start unpacking my own stuff and help her box up hers. I haven't seen my own gear out of boxes for 4 years! I've put picture frames on the walls =)

Thank you for listening!

Hi Wobblez,

Wow that is a lot of stress happening at the moment. I actually think that's rude of your friend to decide to move out before her lease expires & expect you to cover her. I thought if you are leasing a property & leave before the end of your lease then you are required to keep paying the rent until someone else rents the property or takes over the lease.

I don't know if you get any sort of assistance from Centrelink but you should be able to get rent assistance (if you don't already) which should help a little with your rent.

I hope you are able to find someone to help with the rent until your friends return from Canada.

Good luck with the job, if you were to get the job would you be able to find somewhere closer to where the work is?

I've got my fingers crossed for you Wobblez. It sucks about your departing flatmate, but it sounds like you have a lot of great things to look forward to.

Hi CQ,

Unfortunately she could break her lease, she would just have to continue paying rent until the real estate found someone else to lease the house, or her lease expired, whichever came first. Her reasoning was that it would probably take the R/E 3 weeks to find someone, so she may as well pay 3wks worth of rent, and leave me to pay the last remaining 3 weeks that exist on her lease, before it will roll over in my name and my flatmates-to-be from Canada.

It was basically a case of pay the rent or lose the house, leaving my friends coming in from Canada without somewhere to live and me finding somewhere temporary till they return and we all try and find a new place! I spoke to them over skype and they assured me they do want this house and are willing to start paying their share of the rent 6 weeks before they return if it means we can all hold on to it. I feel bad that they have to do that but they have a few more weeks to think about it before we all sign the lease, and unless I can find someone to move in for only 3 months, I cannot cover the whole rent as its actually more than what I earn, benefits included! At least I can totally trust my best mate, she's proven that to me many times =)

Eventually I could move closer to the job but its so hard finding a rental these days especially with a dog, so I'm reluctant to let this one go until we can all be in the same country and secure one together! I'd rather wait till I'm earning then buy a house, it costs the same!

Thank you Nakamova, I have everything including my ovaries crossed! I'm sure things will sort themselves out =)

Wobbly,
I hope you are able to work something out to be able to stay in the place until your friends come back from Canada. That is so nice of your friends to offer to pay rent while they are still away.

I have my fingers crossed for you that you are able to get it all sorted out.

deffo hard too find a house anywhere in the world with a mad JRT!!!, but you can sort it im sure!! one the small things in life

Haha Maisy,

Luckily Connie, my little Jack Russell is a well behaved little dog. She does do her "puppy bog laps" through the house with her squeaky toys when she's excited though. No nuisance barking, digging etc, just a BIG personality =)

Looks like I'm staying at the house so far. Just juggling saving up as much as I can for rent, and setting up a house with things like 2nd hand glasses, plates, microwaves, mop, broom etc! I might not be online for a while, I have a bad virus on my laptop that has been trying to hack into our bank accounts so its currently with my computer man who is going to do a full system wipe. Not sure when I can get a lift back there to pick it up. nother $150 I don't have. When it rains it pours eh? Could be worse =) I had to check in on mum's computer and see what you're all up to!=)

Hope your computer feels better soon...
