Update On Upping of Tegretol Retard & Question!

Hi All,

This is an update. I have now on my increased doseage of tegretol retard - have been since mid-February. I was taking 800mgs/day - 400mgs AM & PM. I now take 1200mgs/day - 600mgs AM & PM. For the most part it has gone the upping of the tegretol retard has gone okay for me - with an increase in dizziness and tiredness! Luckily they seem to be going away very slowly and are lessening for the most part. I do have times, when they are seem to comeback like they were when I first went on the 1200mgs (of tegretol retard) some days - like other the weekend they were much more worse then they had been in the last week or so. Luckily they seem to be settling down again.

Why would they - the dizziness and tiredness side-effects worsen after they were becoming less? Over the time I have been on the 1200mgs/day of tegretol retard this has happened at least twice now. I remain hopeful that the dizziness and tiredness will at lessen to a level with i could easily live with or even better disappear completely.

Please can anyone answer my question at the start of the above paragraph. I don't do anything different - at all really! So am a bit puzzled about why the side-effects I mentioned would suddenly worsen once they were starting to get better!!!

Here's one possible explanation: The extended release versions of AEDs aim to keep consistent levels of med in your blood, but are based on an "average" metabolism. Your metabolism may be more variable or slower than that average, so you end up having "extra" Tegretol in your bloodstream from time to time. Those overlap moments may account for the dizziness and fatigue.

Has your doc checked your blood levels of Tegretol? That might help pin the cause down, or eliminate blood levels as a possible cause.
