Hello everyone,

My friends and I (four of us) try to have a "girl's night" once a month. Our get-togethers are literally just having dinner, talking, and laughing. None of us drink. I notice each time we do this, the next day I am sooo tired. In fact, we went out this past Saturday night, from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The next day, I slept until noon.

I never had this issue until I started taking Keppra a couple of years ago, but I'm not sure if this is a common issue with the medication.

Thank you for your input.

I'm sorry that I can't be precise. But I take four meds, one is Keppra, and I'm exhausted on a regular basis.

Being tired is a side effect of Keppra.

Keppra is one of the meds I'm on and I have to take a nap almost every day. If I do a lot, out late or don't get that nap the day before then I'm as tired as can be the next day. I'll usually sleep in late, take a longer nap and might even have to go to bed early.

finalpoet and valeriedl,

Thank you both for your input! I, too take a daily nap with this medicine. Although I feel guilty for doing so, I have just about come to terms with it. I guess in the back of my mind, I was hoping being so tired after going out wasn't part of it. :( How long have you both been on Keppra? Have you pretty much been told by your doctors that this neverending sleepiness is par for the course? Is there anything you do that you find helps somewhat combat this?

I've been on Keppra for at least 10 years. My neuro has told me that the meds I'm on, which includes Keppra, can cause tiredness so it's not unusual for it to happen.

I've been taking that nap for so long that it's a normal thing for my family and I. There have even been times when my husband will tell me to lay down and take my nap. Sometimes if I go a day or two without getting my nap I might have a seizure. My family might even say it could be because I didn't get that nap because being tired is something that's a seizure trigger for me.

There's really nothing in general that helps me not be tired. Caffeine is a seizure trigger for me so I can't drink 5 cups of coffee to stay awake. I might try going to bed early the day before or sleep in late that day if I know I'm not going to get that nap or be out late the next day but that doesn't always help.

The fatigue may very well be due to medication but other factors can be causes or contributing factors. Low iron, being low in the B vitamins, insufficient protein in the diet, insufficient carbohydrate intake, and dehydration are just some of the possibilities. Reduced iron and B vitamins of course wouldn't suddenly happen in one evening, but may be more noticeable when one is busier than usual. If I haven't had enough protein and/or carbohydrates during the day, I'll feel less energetic and more fatigued than I would otherwise.

If the cause comes down to medication being the issue, is it possible to nap a short time before going out? Might minimize the need to sleep in as long the next morning, as well as prevent or minimize any nocturnal seizures (another possible cause for the fatigue).

My daughter has only been in Keppra for three months and at first she did feel tired but never actually napped. She's now on 2750mgs a day and does a full time job, goes to bed at 11pm and up at 7am and finds keeping active helps keep the tiredness at bay. Her biggest problem is with the crying she sometimes experiences, she can be at work and suddenly feel sad and cry for ages - she's had to come home a couple of times because of it.
Hopefully your tiredness will decrease as you get used to the Keppra - in fact if anything a small problem for her is if she wakes during the night she can have difficulty getting back to sleep which is not good at all.

I suppose like all medication it will affect different people in different ways eh?

Hope your fatigue decreases with time.

That all I needed to read I defiantly not taking keppra.i tried it for few days and I had this awful sensation when husband touch right side of body I just wanted to slap him.i realise at time something wrong and stopped it.I cringe when I think about him touching right shoulder.i do not wish that feeling on anyone
