My son, 16, has generalized genetic epilepsy with tonic clonic upon wakening. He was diagnosed November 2012. He has had three seizures since then, all of them due to sleep deprivation. The epilepsy is well controlled with proper sleep and 1000 mg of Keppra XR. Something new has happened though. Infrequently he is losing sight in both eyes for less than a second. Any thoughts as to what that may be? He is treated by a neurologist at Mayo, but every time I have called to ask a question there, the answer has been to increase his dosage to 1500 mg of Keppra. I am not comfortable with that idea since his tonic clonics are so well controlled. Thank you for any suggestions.

Has he had his blood sugar tested recently? Sometimes, disturbances in blood sugar levels can cause disturbance in vision. Or it could also be the Keppra causing it. Get an appt with his GP and check out his blood sugar levels.

I will check his blood sugar....we do this periodically anyway. It has always been really good, but it is something to look into....thanks.

Does the brief vision loss happen at a particular time of day? Is it accompanied by any other symptoms (headache, fatigue, etc.)?

No, it is very random....it has not happened much, but since the epilepsy diagnosis, I tell him to mention everything to me. There are no other symptoms that I know of, but I will tell him to keep me up to date about it.

If the vision loss starts to progress -- either in frequency or duration -- then your son's neuro needs to come up with some better answers about what is going on.

One of the meds that I'm on is Keppra, plus some others.

During some of my simple partials I will get blurred vision but I don't think that I've ever actually lost vision.

As I said before...damn side effects...I recently had my appointment with the ENT...no fluid in ears however I am scheduled for a TMJ MRI and a hearing test...saw a regular doctor today...had a urinalysis...everything was fine...got some medication for headaches as I have been experiencing them more noticeably accompanied with other symptoms such as dizziness and hearing loss/blurry vision...will be seeing an optometrist as well...follow up with regular doctor next month... :|
