Does anyone know if vomiting will cause the anti seizure meds to not be as affective? My daughter is sick (flu) and is on Lamictol xr.

Thanks!

It depends a bit on how soon after your daughter takes the meds that the vomiting occurs. In general, Lamictal is absorbed fairly rapidly into the system -- it takes about about 1 or 2 hours, slightly slower when taken with food. If she throws up immediately after taking her pills, she should check with her doc about taking a replacement dose. Make sure she is drinking plenty of water, since Lamictal is processed by the kidneys.

It's also the case that infection can lower the seizure threshold, regardless of the Lamictal absorption rate. The quicker she can get on the road to recovery the better.

I'm so sorry she is sick, and hope she feels better soon. Keep us posted.
