Hello!

I started taking Lexapro about a month ago, along with my Keppra. I have lost 5 lbs. since starting the Lexapro (which I don't want to do). I asked the pharmacist if this is a common side effect of taking Lexapro. She said it's more common that one would gain weight while taking it, but it's possible to lose weight.

Is there anyone on here taking Lexapro (or any anti-depressant) with an AED and noticed weight loss?

Thank you.

Hey In1 --

I changed the thread title so people can see it's about Lexapro. No experience with it myself, but I think other folks will be able to comment.

When I was first diagnosed with epilepsy I was taking a ton of different meds because they either didn't work or I couldn't handle the side effects. While I was on one, I'm sorry but I don't remember which and I know I'd been on others at the same time, I lost a ton of weight. My neuro told me that wasn't good and changed it to another med. My husband had cancer a few years ago and had to have radiation and chemotherapy, he gained a TON of weight while doing this and people normally loose weight.

Everyone is different when it comes to med side effects. If you're worried about it talk to your neuro about it and if you want to go off of it let him know.

Thanks Valerie! I'm going to watch for the next week or so and if I'm still losing, I'll definitely have to let him know. I'm crossing my fingers that I don't because for me, this medicine works wonders for depression.

Hey there,

I've taken Lexapro, and it's generic, escitalopram, for about a decade now. It never affected my weight. I've always heard that Lexapro would normally cause a weight gain, but with meds, anything's possible. It all depends on your individual body chemistry and what else you're taking.

I've been on Trokendi XR (basically slow release topomax) and was warned that I'd probably lose weight. It's averaging about a pound a week, but I can afford to lose some, so neither the Dr or I are too worried.

Do you find that you're just not as hungry, or are you eating the same and not retaining it? It's the first for me, and I'm trying to be more mindful about eating regularly.

Hi Natalie! Thank you for your response.

There were a few days that I had to force myself to eat because I had absolutely no appetite. Now that I think about it, during that time, I was also working really hard to meet some work deadlines. I wasn't stressed in a bad way, but had a big adrenaline rush to make sure I met my goals, and usually when I do that, my appetite goes away.

Some tell me I'm fortunate, but for me, it can be kind of unfortunate too, I lose weight really fast if I make any changes. Last year, I decided to stick to just eating lean meats, fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, etc. and ended up losing 20 lbs in a month, which isn't good for being a woman who's 5'10.

You really got me thinking...yeah, it probably was me and not the medicine.

I've finished the big project and feel like I want to eat as often as I did before, so hopefully I should be good.

Thanks again for your input!

My son has been prescribed Lexapro along with Vimpat. He hasn't started on Lexapro yet.

Wanted to know what side effects should one anticipate while on Lexapro?

The only thing I can specifically attribute to Lexapro was a mild headache for the first few days. The doctor said to give it 4 - 6 weeks to see a difference in mood, but I felt a difference in two weeks.

Good luck to your son!
