Hi all

I had a breakthrough seizure after over 10 years due to workplace stress caused by bullying and harassment. Has anyone ever been in sucha. Situation? My employer is not accommodating at all and isn't even acknowledging or accepting the cause of this traumatic event that occurred.

Open to any suggestions how to deal with this. I feel so anxious and stressed.

My last job was a toxic environment.
It wasn't do much the job itself but the employer was useless. He put too such stress on me and his other workers

I was a receptionist, I started there in 2017 as full time and by mid 2018 I was part time as the stress was affecting my seizures.

I ended up job sharing but the 1st person was lazy, she was also studying pt so only there until she finished her studies.

The 2nd girl only lasted 6 months then left.

I was also seeing a psychologist for anxiety as off 2020 and in 2021 my neuro referred me to their psychiatrist. She diagnosed me with depression as well as the anxiety.

By last year I'd had enough, my mental health and depression had gone down hill. I went on stress leave in March until I saw the psychiatrist in April. Then with her approval I resigned.

My boss had no understanding why I left even though the signs that my health wasn't good were there.

I made sure I was on a medical certificate before I left

Good luck and sorry about the seizure

It's sad that it had come to this. I am hoping to find a new job where the team is more supportive. Did your neuro give anything in writing about anxiety? My neuro referred me to my family doctor for stress management.

Sometimes, I wonder if starting to work about a year after my older son was born triggered the start of my complex partials. I couldn't work when I graduated because I was expecting him. I had a couple of very scary incidents, after which my family decided that it was better for me not to work. One day, I exited my office building in downtown Chicago & apparently collapsed on the sidewalk from a complex partial seizure. I "came to" at a hospital. Another time, a seizure occurred while I was standing at the commuter train station. Thankfully, another person was there and prevented me from falling onto the train tracks. I again "came to" in a hospital.

That is absolutely scary. My employer says it is my job duty to reach work however it may be. I requested an accomodation (entirely possible as I work for a huge organization) but denied.

Hi Ngk84,

I had many seizures do to stress on my job and my employer started to give me a hard time about it but then I
called my local epilepsy support group and the next day a lawyer was at the school and had it out with the staff
and they were fired. I've learned over the yrs. you can't let your employer push you around just because you have
epilepsy. My advice to you is to report this matter to your union if you have one and get a note from your Dr.
stating that stress can trigger seizures but you are able to work that way you are covered. I wish you the best of luck
and May God Bless You!

Sue

Thank you Sue. Breaks my heart to know how insensitive people can be. Unfortunately I am in a non-unionized position. But my GP has been very supportive. I will get in touch with him again.

I did something similar but at my currant job.

They know about my epilepsy and mental health issues and are great about it.

I didn't have my 1st seizure at my job until about 6 months after I started.
I walked out and apparently when my supervisor asked if I was OK I told her yo mind her own business.

I did go back when I came too at the bus stop and realised it was too early to go home.

I was appologetic but my supervisor was worried.

I emailed my neuropsych who gave me some info for work on what to expect when I have a seizure (partials) and what to do

I'm lucky my new employers are great and supportive .
