Just curious how many here with epilepsy have had an abnormal neurological exam? I am trying to figure out if any of my other medical problems could be related to the seizures. I have hyperactive deep tendon reflexes, positive babinski, positive hoffman's sign, positive rombergs and ataxia, all which are abnormal. Does anyone know if these can be abnormal with epilepsy?
 
I had an abnormal exam (positive Romberg's) when I was doped up on way too much Dilantin. Other than that, I think I've passed every time.

The hyperactive deep tendon reflexes can sometimes be an indication of low magnesium or low calcium -- something that definitely shows up in folks with seizure disorders. The hyperactive reflexes can also be caused by other kinds of neurological problems involving brain injuries or disease, so it's not a definitive sign all by itself.

Both the Babinski's and Romberg's are linked to spinal issues, particularly the lumbar spine. Have you suffered any spine-related nerve damage or pinching? Maybe as a result of a seizure? Or before you ever had seizures?

Hoffman's can also be linked to spine problems, particularly the cervical (upper) spine. But like some of the others, it can also be a sign of neurological problems related to brain injuries or disease, so it's another one that's inconclusive without other testing. It can also be caused by hyperthyroidism, or anxiety disorders.

Don't know if any of this helpful -- It would probably be best to ask your neuro about any correlations between the test results and your seizures.
 
I have

NO reflexes at all when they do the little reflex hammer thing on me. Drives every single doctor up the wall. It's not as if I'm holding back or anything. I'm totally relaxed, and that's obvious. They still haven't figured out why, either, after years of testing........
 
I am diagnosed with MS too. and that answers all the abnormal neuro testing.

I just would like to attribute it to the seizures and maybe take the MS diagnosis away. I know....just wishful thinking on my part....but I wasn't sure if people with epilepsy had abnormal neuro testing too.

I don't have reflexes, either. The neurologist said not to worry about it.
