my absences last about 5 - 30 seconds. It sounds like she went catatonic. Or in a very prolong non-convulsive status seizure.

Hi whisper, welcome to CWE!

Absence seizures usually last from a few seconds to about 30 seconds. But it is possible to have hundreds over the course of the day, so perhaps that's what's going on. Either way, she needs a good neurologist to help figure out what's going on. An EEG/MRI/CAT scan might help to show what's going on -- has the neurologist scheduled any tests?

Best,
Nakamova

I have seizures that will go on for around 30 seconds to 30 minutes. My neuro told us that if I don't start to come out of the seizure in about 15 minutes then I should go to the er.

I had one recently (I think it was a grand mal) and I wasn't out of it in 15 min. My mom called 911 and when the ambulance got there I was just starting to come out of it. I still wasn't completly back into reality for about another 15 min after that.

Whisper,

I'm so sorry your daughter is going through this.

A convulsive seizure that lasts more than 30 minutes is called "status epilepticus." If it's a generalized seizure you need to call 9-1-1 if it's over 5 minutes.

There is some evidence that a seizure that lasts over 5 minutes can make permanent changes to your brain. I don't find this useful information, because no one could get to the ER that fast. Some people do have emergency meds - distat- for their small children. (and adults, too)

Here's more information:

Whisper, did your daughter have tests in the past, like an EEG, MRI? What did they show?

Do you think it might be time to get a second opinion from another neurologist? Consider finding a seizure specialist - an epi. They know more about seizures and can be more helpful.

Thats what i have been thinking now she may be going into lots through the course of the day ..and then she will go into a full blown seizure when out it two or three maybe she is allways in hosp when she takes a seizure and confused for days ..but every day she is constanlty not her self really sad breaks my heart

I hope she can see the doctor soon, get some more tests, maybe adjust the medication or dose so she (and you) can get some relief.
