Does getting older have any effect on seizures? It seems everything else gets worse with age, just wondering about seizures. thanks.

Emee

Sorry to tell you but in my case it gets worse, but hopefully not all cases.

Hi Emee,
As our minds and bodies are constantly changing anything is possible. As we age our hormones and metabolism change, and both can have a profound effect on seizure activity.
As for 'stopping' having seizures, that's a bit of a misleading idea, as Epilepsy is so unpredictable. Because it is for life with no cure, one can never truly say their seizures have stopped. You may not have one for a year and feel really strong about it then the next day wake up on the floor. If you haven't had a seizure in a long time it is almost always due to being on your therapeutic medication level, the one that's right for you and controls them completely. This doesn't mean your seizures have stopped. For many all it takes is forgetting one dose and a seizure rears its ugly head.
It's unfortunate and something we've all had to, or are trying to, come to terms with, but Epilepsy does not stop or go away. We need the right meds, the right doctor, and a good lifestyle with good friends. If a person has all these it's the best you can do no matter how old you are.

I was diag. when I was 18years old, was put on Dilantin & Phenb. this combo did not control my seizures. Having said that I was able to hold down a job for over 22 years.
I.m 60 now and I have more problems with energy and memory than seizures.
I now and have been on Dilantin (I asked to put back on after drs. tried all the other NeW meds. and I could not tolerate.
Clonazepam was added, with these two my seizures have been control better since the day I was diag.

My epilepsy is caused by a cyst pushing on the hippocampus, the neuro said it would be there for most of my life, but as it's just a pocket of fluid it would eventually go away. Not sure how that would impact seizures though as the last MRI showed that I had some atrophy around the area surrounding the cyst. I'm guessing it's probably the atrophy the cyst has caused rather than the actual cyst thats causing problems. Only time will tell, fingers crossed it doesn't get worse. Everybody is different I think it depends on whats causing the seizures and unfortunatly luck probably plays a part in it too, some peoples bodies and brains just age differently

I yamtrying to stay optimistic that my seizures will eventually be completely controlled. The first t/c was right after the birth of my baby 30 years ago. I always seemed to have more seizures during ovulation and my period. Obviously the seizures are somehow related to hormones. So, I am hoping when I'm through menopause maybe they will end.
