Hi,
I am new here so hope this is the right place to ask. My son was born in 2005. When he was about 3 months old, I had 2 seizures, one was a serious grand mal seizure which lasted 20 minutes and I went in and out of the seizure for about an hour in total. Then about 2 weeks later, I had a second grand mal seizure in my sleep.
Prior to this, I have never had seizures or been epileptic and I have not had any seizures since the 2 above. I take lamotrigine, 150mg a day but i honestly think that if I stopped taking it I wouldn't have seizures; I mainly carry on taking it because stopping would mean giving up driving which is a major problem as we live in a village.
I had EEGs, brain scans etc and they all came back completely normal so the consultant was quite baffled as to what had caused the seizures. I have my own theory... they both timed with the first period after my pregnancy, the first one around the time of ovulation and the second just before my period. I know my hormones were very high during pregnancy (above average) and I believe that as they dropped from such a high level it triggered a pattern of seizures which would time with catamenial epilepsy type seizures. My consultant didn't dismiss this, he said it was a very interesting theory but difficult to prove with hindsight.
Anyway, I am now at a point where I would like to have another child but I am very frightened of doing so, given the seizures I had. As i understand it, I could have had brain damage from the seizures I had as they were bad grand mal ones but I luckily didn't. My son has ADHD and autism and is very hard work so that also means that i worry more about complications from seizures as I feel I have a huge responsibility to him, more so given his care needs.
I would like to hear from anyone else who had seizures just in isolation around the time of childbirth and how it affected you in subsequent pregnancies?
