I've been taking Neurontin for partial seizure many years. Now I'm reading caution should be used by anyone over 75 taking it. My doc does keep check on my kidneys function, but I can't help worrying if I live to 75 what med's will I take for seizures? Aren't most med's dangerous when we're elderly & our body doesn't metabolize things like it used to? thanks.

I'm not 75 but I was on Neurontin a few yrs. ago and my seizures got worse, then I found out that the drug co. was doing off market labeling with the drug and for some people it caused them to get epilepsy. If you check out on line
Neurontin lawsuits you will find the co. has been sued for millions. My Dr. got me off the drug and my seizures decreased greatly. Keep track of your seizures and if you notice they are getting more severe or more frequent get off the Neurontin a.s.a.p. I wish you only the best and May God Bless You!

The cautionary warning is just that -- a warning. It doesn't mean that someone over 75 can't take neurontin at all, only that an elderly patient should have blood serum levels and creatinine clearance rates tested from time to time, and the dose should be adjusted downward if clearance rates are slow or if there is any kidney impairment.

However, it may be worth having a conversation now with your neuro about the long-term outlook with your AED. There are many seizure drugs out there, so if there's the possibility of problems down the road it's important to know what your options will be.
 
I sure get your concern. I'm not taking neurontin but I've had the same concern as I age, how will my body cope with the drugs I've been taking since age 13. I am 67 now so that's at least 54 years of medications. Do you know if any ill effects are reversible if they show up and you switch to another? I'd just keep on top of it, because if testing is required, sometimes drs. do forget things. I wish you good luck in the years to come.
 
Thank you! I keep in mind that all med's must be metabolized by the body (liver or kidneys) & eventually they wear out.
