Anyone tried trilpetal?!

Hi Guys

As I've had no real success with Keppra, 1500mg am 1500mg pm, my doctor has suggested I try and gradually introduce Trileptal. I am currently having mainly Simple Partial Seizures/Auras and having read up on Trileptal, I am aware that it is best effective for Simple and Complex Partials, and auras.

I started to introduce it into my drug regime 3 days ago, just 300mg pm initially for the first week, then 300mg am aswell, and I can honestly say that it has really helped my auras, I was having them every ten minutes before, and I have probably had a couple in the last three days! result! I am trying not to build my hopes up, but what a result eh?!

I am eventually going to stop the Keppra altogether, it is as much use as the proverbial chocolate fireguard! I just hope to hear back from you guys who have tried Trileptal.

I am at home at the moment because I have been told that I have to have a medical for work, as I "conked out" a few times last week, bad timing eh,the first week in a new job?! I'm trying to remain positive and upbeat, would love to hear from you wonderful folk here at CWE, you all keep me going sometimes!!

I tried Trileptal and since it's in the Tegretol Family my seizures went throught the roof.

I take 1500 mg of trileptal a day, and 100 mg zonagran. Other than making me sleepy and a little dizzy if taken on a empty stomach, It works ok for me.

Good to hear from you!

I took Trileptal and it did work well for the seizures, but I was eventually taken off the medication because it lowered my sodium too much. I sure hope you find something that works for you.

That was the last med that Rebecca tried. She didn't do well on tegretal so I am not sure why this doctor even tried it on her, but I didn't know better at the time.

It caused fever, and sores in her mouth, so it was discontinued.

I'm allergic to Tegretol, so why the Epi
put me on Trileptal is :::: whoosh ::::
over my head!

Trileptal is a lot like Keppra, it can work
wonders for some and be a nightmare for
others. If Tegretol doesn't work for you,
the chances are your body will most likely
tolerate Trileptal than Tegretol (which in fact
is a very old medication - and Trileptal is a
newer medication). More people have more
positive response with Trileptal than with
Tegretol, but as with all AEDS.
It doesn't always work for everyone and
everyone is different ... SO GOOD LUCK

I've been taking Trileptal for years ..... since at least 2005 it's been four of the 300mg tablets per day. I understand my 1200mg is the typical dosage.
I also take three 100mg Topamax.
Before then I took Keppra (I forget the amount) at the same time. For many years I took 3 AEDs at the same time.

Trileptal or Topamax causes ~blush~ diarrhea for me but ....... that's my only complaint.

I hope Trileptal is kind and good for you.

I am also on Trileptal. I couldn't tolerate Tegretol at all. Interesting that I'm doing ok on the Trileptal, the side-effects haven't been as harsh. Although, as Cindy mentioned, I do have to closely watch my sodium levels.

I can say I agree with everyone here. When I was on Trileptal I had to watch my sodium levels and get more blood work to make sure everything was going ok. My body worked better with Tegretol than Trileptal. I couldnt handle that medicine for long. But everyone is different. I hope it works better for you. Take care & Goodluck!

I've been on Trileptal for at least 2-3 years. Sometimes it was combined with other AEDs. But it seems it was more effective alone. I am currently taking 900 mg in the morning and 1200 mg at night. I still have my CPS, but they haven't gotten any worse. Of all the AEDs I have been on, Trileptal has to be the least evasive one.

Out of all the AEDs I have been on, Trileptal was the easiest on my body.

Trileptal Side Effects:

From the Trileptal side effects list I have only experienced:

1. sore throat
2. severe blistering, peeling, (scalp & areas of the face)

And perhaps:

3. jaundice (yellowing of the skin), because it is occurring in the same spots as
side effect 2.


Note: These side effects showed up when Trileptal was becoming the only AED I was taking. Unlike the following AED combinations:

Trileptal with Depakote (severe stomach/groin pain)
Trileptal with Topamax (severe stomach/groin pain)
Trileptal with Zonegran (severe stomach/groin pain)
Trileptal with Keppra (severe stomach/groin pain)
Trileptal with Lyrica (severe night seizures)

It was these various combinations that caused me to have kidney stones, gall stones, then finally gall bladder removal surgery.

I am currently on Trileptol, Depakote and Keppra, all at the max doses to try to control my seizures. With this combination they have been able to bring down the severity of my seizures to where they primarily occur when I am falling asleep. The only downside to this is the side effects are very bad with this combination. Introducing Keppra into the combination of Depakote and Trileptol is what seemed to work, but if they bring any of the dosages down my seizures get worse.

So far this seems to be the best point they can get me too, as I have already tried numerous combinations of other meds that had no luck. For me Trileptol seems to be helping out alot but according to my doctors it is very common to use it with Keppra.

Wow!! I cannot thankyou enough for getting back to me with a list of possible side effects of these bloody AEDs!!

Since being on Keppra, about 2 or 3 years now, I have had the most excruiating stomach pains just under where your ribs meet, like a hot burning pain, not all the time, only sometimes, nothing seems to aggravate it or make it better, now that I'm on Trileptal aswell, I've had what I suspected were grumbling appendix, a real hot aching pain across my groin, again, it is not a constant pain, but quite uncomfortable when it wants to be. I had convinced myself that I had something horrible wrong with me, I guess I always have been one to think the worst and worry about stuff. I remember when I was a kid, my mum said.."Oh Elaine, why can't you just have a tummy ache, no, it has to be Cancer!!" I am a natural born worrier.

The Trileptal has worked, I haven't had a problem with my auras or anything for over two weeks, which is brilliant!! Thank God the auras have stopped, they were the worst part of having this Godawful condition, I have been itching a lot, especially on my legs and back, do you think this could be the Trileptal?

Thanks for that info, I'm seeing my specialist soon, and my GP and I will mention it, but you have made me feel a little bit better for the time being.
