Are night mouthguards safe?

After my last trip to the dentist he ordered me a mouthguard as i keep breaking and chipping my teeth in the night. He said to me that it looks like i grind and bite my teeth a lot and that i should have a mouthguard to stop me from doing it.

Has anyone else had one and are they safe to wear in case of a seizure? My dentist knows i have epilepsy. The mouthguard i have is more like a clear rubber than a plastic and was made to measure for my mouth. It fits snugly and doesn't move around at all. I couldn't imagine it coming loose enough for me to choke on it, but i'm not sure...

Add the teeth grinding to the teeth already missing from doing faceplants and i really don't want to lose more!
 
My dentist had one of those made for me too. Curse you Lou for reminding me to get back in the habit of wearing it at night.

I never worried about it being unsafe, maybe because I don't usually have tonic/clonic seizures but it does stay stuck on my teeth pretty well. It has made me wonder if my grinding my teeth at night has anything to do with my seizures though.
 
I have one too, and yes they are safe otherwise they wouldn't give you one

My son grinds his teeth at night. As for mouthguards are unsafe for severely mentally impaired children like my son he seals his teeth twice a year.
 
I have one from when I played hockey and it softens in boiling water
I should wear it at night
I will use it again and again
 
It's kind of weird getting used to it... I wonder if teeth grinding is a really common thing then. Most of my tonic clonic seizures are nocturnal.
 
I have been grinding my teeth for decades. But, I first started wearing one consistently, in 2007 at 40yrs.-old
 
Wore it last night and its worn a small hole into my gum above my left canine. I must have been doing some amount of grinding for it to do that O.o

Perhaps I should go to have it re-fit...
 
yes, get it refit -- you don't want to end up with mouth sores.
 
I agree with Nakamova, remember it was supposed to be made in case you grind your teeth.
