Does anyone know if this can be a simple partial seizure?
I can't remember exactly when these 'staring' spells started but i have had a lot of head injuries (pebbles in front of head (gr.1), concussion back of head (gr.7), hit head on ice back of head (gr.7),i think there is a couple more but i don't remember...im 15) and i mainly started to notice them after my concussion.
I'm thinking they are simple partial seizures due to my research but im not exactly sure. Randomly i'll stare off for about what feels like 10-25 seconds often at least once a day. I feel relaxed and don't want to come out of it? But with the relaxation also comes weakness, i can make movements and talk, but it takes a lot of effort. I am aware of what's happening around me but im not involved. Also during this whole time, my vision is blurred, kind of like when your about to make yourself go crossed eyed. SOMETIMES, i find myself swallowing just a little or smacking inside my mouth a little at the beginning of the stare but usually stops once i notice or just stops. I usually stop what im doing, or i'll stop ahead of time before i start to stare (i think they are called auras but i don't know what mine is, but sometimes i know when im about to stare). I also usually find myself taking one deep breath in and then breathing it out and not taking another breath until i stop staring, but i dont feel the need to take another breath?
*this isn't included while im staring but ive noticed in the past month give or take that i've had a lot of little minor twitches in my body, and not often but sometimes i all os a sudden feel my eyes move back and forth really fast for what feels like a split second.
could these be simple partial seizures?
I also heard that simple partial seizures don't show up well on EEGs, i've had one but it came back normal?

I just had a veeg done last year and had alot of simple partial seizures that never showed up on the eeg. Ive found out later that the seizures could be too deep in my brain to be picked up on. I am aware of whats going on during all of them, I just cant respond to any of them til after its over.

how long do the video EEGs take? would you recommend it?

Hi Kyla,

Welcome to CWE.

I have had seizures all my life. On all the EEG nothing showed up.
It was an MRI at a teaching hosp. that finally showed the area of my brain that seizures come from.

It has always taken two meds. to keep my seizures under control ( for the most part)
My seizures sound like yours, I stare, I can hear what is been said and I know where I.m at. I just can not say anything.
I smack my lips, and have movement in my hands. I will swallow hard and very often. This is how my seizures were for many years.
How I will stare, cann't speak, they last about 2 to 3 seconds.

Thank you SOOO much for your reply... i've never met/talked to anyone who shared the same thing as me!I've researched and researched and all the symptoms, half of them i was like, 'no, not exactly'...i thought i was going crazy! I have a huge sense of releif! i'm going to let my parents know that i should go get a second opinionthank you so much, and many wishes to you

The VEEG is where you are admited to the hospital and hooked up to all the equipment. I spent 5 days in the hospital. Some drs can have you stay in there for a few days, or even longer. Just depends on what your dr suggests.

wow thats a long time!! thanks for the info! best of luck to you :)

Welcome, I had some friends lately talk to me about the stuff I did before my seizures became a lot more rampant. Pretty eye opening.

What you describe is similar to what I would did a lot when I was 16 and never really paid attention to it. Friends always asked me why I spaced out a lot, I wasn't fully aware I was doing it. And when I did stare off it was exactly how you describe. I felt really relaxed and my vision blurred out. Epilepsy is a confusing thing. EEG's can often be missed, and it's possible this could pass.

It runs in my family, my niece has started staring off and not responding. And I don't think they have gotten a diagnosis for her. I would have people around you pay attention to these events. Finding a patter, or a possible trigger should help you a lot in the future. Best of luck.

BOTH of my parents and my younger brother do this. You're talking to them then they are staring off someplace else and you're like "hey...hello? anybody home? hello?" and they don't hear you at all, then suddenly they sort of jerk like some people do before they fall asleep and the go "Sorry...what?". IDK if it's a seizure , wouldn't surprise me if it were. the whole family has been been visited by the epilepsy fairy.

Thank you all for your responses, im going to bring this up to my parents again and see if they can get me to a doctor for a second opinon
best of wishes to you all,
Kyla
