So my lovable cat is a real troublemaker. Jumping on everything, always knocking stuff over, eating anything that's on the floor, etc.

I come upstairs and I see my lamotrigine all over the floor. He knocked over the pill case and they spilled everywhere. He was just sitting there looking at me.

I counted the pills and I was one 25mg tablet short, I was worried that he ate it! They taste bad but considering he eats paper, his own hair.. I was worried.

Turns out he was playing with it and managed to transport it across the house. I was relieved when I found it.

Does anyone know what could have happened if he ate it? I suppose I need to be more careful.. :embarrassed:

Well, there's not really any toxicity data for cats, although lamotrigine has been used for dogs before for treatment of epilespy.

25mg is a low dose though, so as a one-off i would advise to keep an eye on it for 24hours, and if in doubt, ring a vet. More than likely it would just make your cat sleepy.

Cats do like getting into trouble, don't they? Lol.

yeah what Lou said. although I have heard of Lamictal/Lamotrigine being used for cat epilepsy as well, but with such tiny bodies, the 25mg may still be alot. Just keep an eye on the poor baby and make sure he drinks alot.

Also I have dropped several of my pills and am always worried that my kitties have at them. Not sure what Dilantin or Gabapentin can do to animals.

OY...I would have had one of my critter's jaws open and been gitting some dish soap in them to make them vomit so quick they wouldn't have known what hit them  I don't take any chances after my dingy dogs got a hold of some tylenol once...ONCE...they don't go near anything that rattles like a pill bottle now. Tylenol will kill an animal :(

Yikes.. I'm glad my kitty didn't try and eat the pill. I need to keep them away from him from now on.

According to the Merck veterinary manual the only E drug reccommended for cats is phenobarbital at 1-2 mg per KG or Diazepam at .25-2mg per KG...everything else is off limits to cats and considered toxic. They have tried a number of human E meds on dogs with varying levels of success but in vary small dosages in comparison to what we take  I would say if one of our furry friends were to ingest our meds by accident to either take 'em to a vet or try to get them to upcheck it as quickly as possible :(

I have a 60lbs white/yellow lab male named Umbro and he is my guide dog and seizure responce dog and he actually ate one of my Tegretol XR 200mg pills that I acidently dropped. He is highly trained but sometimes they are just dogs- when not working. So he went for it and sometimes I do drop his treats, so that could be one reason too.
Anyway- he ate it and I realized it and called the vet. He said that Umbro will get lethargic and maybe depressed until the med got through his system.
He also asked how much of it do I take and for what condition. I told him I take 600mg and its for Epilepsy. I think he guesses that I'm on a higher dose of Tegretol XR than just 200mg and that if its okay for me to take it, then its Ok if Umbro took in that pill. Kinda strange.
Anyway- he told me what to look for and that he would probably be okay. They do have Tegretol for animals that have Epilepsy. My neighbor had a black lab that was on Tegretol just like me LOL

Umbro has never had another one of my pills again. I do worry about that since he has done it before- but I usually deal with my meds in the kitchen over the counter so if I drop it, it won't go on the floor as often.

I bought a pill box that has too locking parts on it. One is locked once the cover on the side it snapped shut, then the actual compartments are locked and you have to push down on the top corner that is a switch that will open the individual day.. kinda hard to explain. But I could drop it or through it or whatever and it would never come open.
They sell them at Walgreens and they are for 7 days 4 separate times of the day. You might take a look at one of those to see if you like it and if it would work out for ya.
Your naughty kitty probably would never be able to get into it- I highly doubt kitty would without the help of another kitty or person LOL

Give your kitty a pet for me. Umbro gives a bark hello.

Take care,
Crystal and her guide Umbro

Lol... perhaps not for cats - washing up liquid and certain soaps are toxic to them :P

Oh my goodness! My dog has eaten my meds before. He now has the lowest cholesterol of any dog on the block.

Any time of day or night you can call the poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. They are at a state level, but in my state they happily answer poison questions regarding pets as well as their usual human subjects.

I forgot to mention that when my friend's guide dog had eaten a lot of chocolate, as well as one of my pet doggies, we were instructed to give the one-two tbsps of hydrogen paroxide which forces them to throw up.. kinda nasty but it works and is prescribed by a vet.
So next time they ingest anything they shouldn't, call the vet or use the paroxide and see if anything comes up.
Dish soap and other soap has a lot of chemicals in it including emulsifiers which break down oils and dirts etc.
I can imagine that going down too well- it could cause more damage than anything.
Did you call the vet?

I called the poison hot line....I didnt have any peroxide on hand :( They had me dilute a feew drops of dish soap (3-4?) in a cup of water and syringe it into the dogs. THey vomit pretty quickly. Pieces of capsule came up in one dog, nothing from the other dog....I didn't sleep that night. I didn't even think of peroxide for the kitties since I don't know of its toxicity for them (doh) or that dish soap might be bad for them...Regular Dawn dishsoap is one of the few things you can bathe kittens in to get rid of fleas and they groom themselves afterwards with no ill effects :ponder:
