hi my name is mikyla and I'm new to this website, i had a seizure on Friday and i bit the left side of my tongue once again :/ , and now cant talk and when i try to eat something it takes three times longer to eat than normal and its frustrating and wondered if anyone else has this problem and any advice?

Hi Mikyla, welcome to CWE!

The sore mouth/tongue -- I know how painful that can be. It will heal though. In the meantime, stay away from acid foods (like tomato sauce), and stick to soft ones. I found that hard-boiled eggs helped when I didn't feel like eating anything else. Drink plenty of water, and suck on ice as well.

You could also try Anbesol. It's a gel for relieving mouth and tooth pain, including sore gums. It's available over-the-counter at drugstores. And you might ask your pharmacist or dentist for other suggestions.

If it's not healing, or the pain is intolerable, definitely see a dentist or doctor. They can gauge if something else needs to be done, and also use topical numbing sprays to help.

Best,
Nakamova

Hi Mickie & hope you are ok - In a stupid kind of way I'm trying to reassure that biting the Tongue is "normal" for me (but then I'm Irish anyway!!) - Every time I have a GM I bite my Tongue & often catch it in my teeth as I grind them during a PS - so I get used to looking like I've gone 2 rounds with Tyson!
Take care
Col

I can understand exactly how you feel. I myself have numerous sleep seizures, and although I tend not to bite my tongue, I have bitten the side of my mouth many times, tend to grind my teeth, and have ended up constantly with a major case of TMJ disorder due to constantly tearing the muscle in my right mandibular jaw. I have gone to a dentist numerous times for it, had to go to the ER once the first time also. With my sleep seizures the dentist recommended a mouthpiece when I sleep and also a regular sports mouth guard during the day just in case. Unfortunately it didn't work, somehow I spit them out each time I have a seizure.

The only thing that the dentist has been able to do was to give me a prescription for painkillers for that, but he was limited to only refilling it once due to the DEA restrictions for dentists prescribing narcotics as they cannot do long term pain treatment and Tramidol causes me to go into status seizures so now I am stuck trying to get by on ibuprofen. The good thing about it is that the ibuprofen helps with the swelling so if you are able to take that it may help take the swelling down and eliminate some pain.

s10,

Pain is the worst. Do you have health insurance? If you do, there are Pain Specialists who can help you. These docs are usually anesthesiologists, but their work isn't to put people to sleep for surgery. It's to treat the pain. And it usually works. Sometimes there is even a non-drug solution.

Endless,

Thanks for the ideas on that, unfortunately I lost all of my health insurance when I lost my job in June. They fired me on the final day of the month so I had no chance to get anything taken care of as they fired me at 7 pm so all of the docs were closed at the time, go figure LOL. Anyways, I am currently on a Medically Needy plan through Medicaid in Kansas, unfortunately it has a spend down of 3000 dollars every 6 months and I have found out that my medications that I am on are not covered so all of the money I spend on them does not count towards the spend down. Needless to say I just deal with it anymore, no choice as I can't afford the expenses. I will talk to my epileptologist at the end of the month though, as they usually are able to point me in the right direction and since I am going for my neuropace RNS clinical trial appt, Neuropace is covering the cost since I have no insurance and so talking to the doc will not cost me that way.

I know this may be a late response but on the off chance another person like myself stumbles upon this looking for advice I have some

I suffer from tonic-clonic seizures, mostly in my sleep, every few months. 4 days ago I had 2 seizures in the same day. The first one in the morning before I woke up second in the middle of the day and as a result my tongue was destroyed! It still is in a lot of pain 4 days later

I have been using an anaesthetic/antiseptic called ANBESOL - it stings a little but then numbs the cut tongue and aids healing

Also used MEDIJEL - it is a gel that numbs the area a lot very good to use right before you are going to eat food but can slide off the tongue

and today I went to the pharmacy and the guy there gave me a mouthwash called DIFFLAM ORAL RINSE - its the best!! It says its for sore throats but if you gargle some of it for a few seconds and spit it out the cut on your tongue will be quite numbed for about 30 mins or an hr

All I can say is bitten tongues suck..and sadly there isn't much that can be done about it. Just be smart about what you eat and what medicines you use..and pray it heals fast and know there are a lot of people out there who are going through the exact excruciating pain

yes it does suck ! I'm missing a few chunks myself ,lol ! but what i've found helpful when it happens is using chloroseptic spray to numb it some , and i put dental wax over my back teeth ( or whichever ones happen to be rubbing your tongue ) that keeps it from hurting when my tongue touches & keeps it from getting worse when im talking ( you never realize how much your tongue rubs across your teeth till your teeth attack , lol ) sorry if someone has already suggested any of this , hope you find something that works for you !

Biting

Hi. I've had epilepsy for 45 years and typically would bite:bigsmile: my tongue, cheek and/or lips on nearly always the left side. Probably, the reason for biting on the left side is due to my head turns to the left so..... Anyway, hope this will give some understanding and ideas to your question.>>>>ROBERT

As told someone the other week if you can take the pain gargling salt water works wonders only smashed my tongue up real bad once but the salt worked :)

I bite my tongue in my nocturnal seizures as well, been getting worse of late as i also shattered several teeth while clenching my jaw more tightly than usual, leaving sharper edges, and resulting in a hole right through the center of my tongue. OUCH! But Anbesol saved my sanity i must say. My own bad habits (smoking) slowed the healing and possibly caused some damage of its own, but eating became a true test of withstanding pain! Good luck and fast healing! ;-)

Hope this helps

I have had grand mal seizures for 14 yrs now. Just recently I've started having them in my sleep and bite my lip and tongue. I also chipped a few teeth from grinding. Results in a lot if pain. I started using my fitted tooth bleaching trays I got from the dentist that perfectly align w my teeth. They never fall out and have saved me a lot of pain. I definitely recommend getting some from your dentist. Tina

As long as you haven't bit off the whole tongue, then you are doing fine. :) I've had bit my tongue and it took like 2 yrs before it healed to the point where i could no longer detect it was still there. And that was just a small bite in the top of the tongue.

Yes I have always had that problem of biting my tongue and sometimes my inside cheek.
It is very painful but takes time to heal depending how bad the bite is. I swear I have scars now. Just a reminder I guess.

Wax

As silly as it might seem, I fashioned a wax mouth piece by melting wax and waiting until it was cool enough to be formed. I put it in my mouth on the top and used my fingers to get the shape of my upper mouth and around my teeth. Then when it hardened in my mouth, I took it out and had a handy device to use while sleeping (I have TMJ). It kept me from grinding at night. It came in handy after my nighttime seizure where I bit the right side of my cheek which hurt to have my teeth brush against it.

I have nocturnal seizures. I have a dentist-made mouth guard, and the tongue and cheek bites have been substantially reduced (improved control of nocturnal seizures has helped as well).

I get tongue and cheek bites but the tongue ones are horrible. I chew up both sides and now that all is healed (for awhile) I have a very weird looking tongue and I have to be careful now with eating too.

Yes. I use a mouth gard made for sports. They are cheap and a left wing dentist told to try that when my state insurance stopped paying for 'proper' ones that they make (300 bucks!) and the form fitting sports ones for a few bucks work fine and keeps my tongue in safely too.

I have nocturnal sz all the time and bit my tongue, never know when it might occur.
