Is it possible to develop allergies overnight all of a sudden? I've never had allergies a day in my life and now all of a sudden I'm allergic to my cats. I've only had E a few months so really it's the only change in my life. I don't want to get rid of my kitties so I'm going to wash everything and de-fur the house, but it's the strangest thing since I'm 40 years old and never been allergic before. Has this happened to anyone else?

I've read that keppra can cause a chronically runny nose. Maybe there are others that can cause the same thing. They might have called it sinusitis but I'm not sure.

I'm allergic too my cats but E45 itch relief and anti anti histamines work fine id ask ya doc bout these though can't take certain ones with meds, I was allergic before but alot worse now because of med side effects

Hi Brandi, I've lived with cats all my life with no problems, then suddenly realised I was allergic to the new kitten we got at the start of the year. I don't have E though so it's not the meds with me. I don't know if there is any connection with the meds but you can definitely just start to be allergic things - Christmas trees were another one for me x

I don't know if Epilepsy or meds can cause allergies, but I do know that back in the Fall when our son was having a bad seizure relapse that he suddenly grew intolerant/allergic to foods he's eaten for years (eggs, avocado, eggplant, etc.). Sometimes allergies flare up in times of stress, but now he's been seizure free for 3 months, so we're trying out these foods again to see if he can tolerate them now. So far...that is not going well.

Recent research indicates that about 11% of epilepsy cases are apparently CAUSED by antibodies -- allergic reactions that seem to be mostly auto-immune. (See thread on Antibodies causing Epilepsy)

Wow, thank you all for the feedback! Very interesting!

Karen, a few weeks ago my Dr. added Trileptal to help with seizure control and it gave me the beginning symptoms of Steven Johnsons Syndrome (swollen lymph nodes, fever, flu-symptoms, sore throat, pimples, muscle aches) so she took me off of it and right after that is when I developed this weird allergy to my cats so I'm wondering if it triggered a response in my system. After reading your thread it got me thinking!

I have food intolerance because of the seizures or seizures because of the food intolerance. Not sure which, but I definitely can't have dairy, gluten, some grains... None of my dr.s think its related, but its there. Never noticed till last year and thats when my seizures started again.
....anyways sorry for the rambling. Hope you are able to get it all under control. :)

Hi Brandibrat -- our Jon had an allergic reaction to Lamictal several years ago (the skin rash, vomiting, etc.), but that didn't seem to precipitate any other allergies at that time.

6 months after the Lamital reaction, he started waking up covered in hives. He hadn't been eating any new foods, and his only med was Depakote, which he'd been on for 6 months (it replaced the Lamictal), and isn't one of those drugs that typically cause an allergic reaction. His pediatrician thought it was the Depakote, but his neurologist thought it wasn't. Anyway, he was put on Claritin for a couple weeks, and that was the end of the hives (never did find what was triggering them). That allergic episode didn't seem to have any correlation with seizures (he'd been seizure free for several months on the Ketogenic diet at that point).

Tattoofriend -- eliminating certain foods (especially gluten, and also foods containing MSG) have helped with seizure control for lots of people. So...sometimes, some sort of food intolerance can trigger seizures. But it seems the opposite can also be true.

Our Jon was already gluten free (in fact, no grains at all) on the Ketogenic diet, but was eating eggs just about every morning for breakfast with no problem (and also eating avocado almost every day and eggplant maybe two or three times a month). Then, the eggs and avocado suddenly started giving him diarrhea, and the eggplant actually triggered seizures (he had 3 episodes where he had a seizure just after eating eggplant).

So, he's been off of eggs and avocado for about 4 or 5 months now, and we took out all the nightshade veggies (I probably will never give him eggplant again). We've been trying to reintroduce egg to see if he can tolerate it now.
