Hey there, I've always been someone who drinks lots of fluids but over the last couple of weeks I've been permanently thirsty. I drink constantly from one end of the day to the other. Juice, pop, water, anything really. It getting really bad seems to coincide with me starting tegretol and I was wondering if anyone else had experienced the same? I've also lost about 7lb in the last two weeks, and I thought Tegretol was known for weight increase?

I've been on tegretol for decades and never had problems with thirst nor have I ever read it to be on the Tegretols side-effect list. Do remember though that drinking most pop will slightly dehydrate you because of the caffeine.

Yeah I didn't recall seeing it on side effects either, but I've not been home since Tuesday so haven't been able to check. Got an appointment with docs today anyway, maybe he could shed some light on it. Thought I'd ask in here first.

The site below lists both thirst and loss of appetite as Tegretol side effects:

Patients taking Tegretol can develop stomach upset side effects following treatment. Typically, stomach related side effects can include heartburn, nausea or vomiting, explains MedlinePlus. Certain patients can also develop bowel movement changes, such as diarrhea or constipation, while receiving treatment with Tegretol. Additionally, dry mouth side effects, such as increased thirst or sore throat, can arise in patients taking this medication. These side effects of treatment can lead to a temporary decrease in appetite in certain people. Eating a small snack before taking a dose of Tegretol can help prevent severe stomach upset side effects in patients.

Not that I mind losing some weight really, I just found it unusual. Sitting waiting at the docs now. I have also had some stomach problems too. Thanks for that Nak!

Just got back from docs. He did a urine glucose test which was fine and then said that dry mouth and thirst is a common side effect of Tegretol. Funny how that's not on the package insert, or if it was then I didn't notice it. I have to go for a blood test in a couple weeks though to check my kidney function, thyroid and blood sugar because there's a history of blood problems in my family. Mind you, I think we have a history of everything in my family lol.

I hope you're not having any other health problems Lou, but it's good your doc is checking to be on the safe side.

Yeah i hope there's not anything else too. He seems a bit concerned that i'm permanently cold and pale too and that i've done every diet under the sun and am still overweight despite going to the gym and everything. I think that's what the thyroid check is for.

Fingers crossed, i have enough on my plate lol.
