I was just curious if any one else had any experiences where the medication they were on changed the type of seizures they were having.
My wife had tonic-clonic seizures only as far as anyone (including herself) knows about before starting on Depakote. She had 3 of them, with very similar postictal phases and length of the actual tonic-clonic phases. With each of these 3 they lasted about 1-2 minutes with a confusion and impaired cognitive function each time lasting 15-20 minutes.
After starting Depakote she had a partial seizure, to the best of our knowledge. Her sister was with her the whole day and would have noticed the tonic-clonic. She said she just started saying strange things then progressively got more and more confused and confrontational. This lasted much, much longer than her previous seizures/postical phases. By the time she got home nearly an hour later she still thought we were in a different state of residence and was half in and half out of awareness. This last for another hour, maybe 2, then she was back to herself slowly but surely.
I was just curious if the medication could have some how stopped the seizure before it generalized. Also, is that a good sign that the medication is working? Has anyone else experienced a similar progression?
At the time of the partial seizure, she was on 500mg once a day (night). Now she's on 1000mg total (500mg morning, 500mg night). She had the first tonic-clonic 1.5 years ago, then another a year later, then the last one about 2 months ago. Since the 1000mg about 3 weeks ago, she has been seizure free.
