Somewhere on this forum recently I read a post where a member said that "the seizures were caused by Epilepsy".
I want to clarify this thought. It is one that runs deep with many, and it truly confused me, when I began on this journey with Rebecca. I was lucky enough to have a mentor, that was very kind to help me sort out the fact from the fiction.
Epilepsy does not cause seizures. Epilepsy can't cause seizures. Epilepsy is only a label for the fact that you have had two or more unprovoked seizures.
What causes seizures are many, many, many ... different reasons. More than we can possibly know right now. Also what I understand is, one cause can affect ten patients in ten different ways. No two people will show the exact same symptoms.
Some of these seizures will show up on an EEG and some will not. Some will see malformations in an MRI or an MRA and others will not. It does not mean that the patient is not having seizures. If you have had two seizures than you are classified most of the time with Epilepsy. Remember it is only a label.
There are many things you can do to change this label. The sooner the better, in my opinion. The brain can learn to seize. This is called kindling.
What you do to take an active role in your care is up to you. We have offered many directions for you to explore, and hopefully your current doctor is willing to walk this path with you. If not I suggest you find one that is. There is a lot of new and contemporary research being considered in alternative therapy.
Obviously as I suggested above, that no two people with Epilepsy are the same. There will be those that are not able to turn back the clock. However, there are many others in my estimation, that with diligence and hard work, who can.
I am not a medical doctor, but a mother that has joined the "warrior" club.
