I've been taking Dilantin for a while. 200mg twice a day (Phenytek capsules). I usually go a year or so between seizures, sometimes longer. However, every once in a while I have a breakthrough and when I get tested my level has dropped but it eventually goes back to normal. I have never had any side effects except my gums bleeding.
2 months ago I had a seizure about an hour after a nap after having food poisoning for a few days. I got tested afterwards and my med level was low. My doc and I decided maybe if I took a little more it would help keep my level stable all the time.
I started taking an extra 100mg generic dilantin capsule every night and it made me feel horrible. Dizzy, tired, anxious, panicked and depressed so I started taking the 100mg capsule every other night. So I was doing 400mg one day and 500mg the next. After a few days I started to feel much, much better. I still haven't felt 100% but close... maybe 90-95% but still anxious and a little depressed.
After a few weeks I took another test and my level was still high. I can only imagine how high my level was when I took 500 every day...
Well here is my question come in...
My doc is now dropping my dose to 400mg one day and 450mg the next and has prescribed 50mg dilatin infatabs. Im happy about this, but after getting the infatabs, I saw the the label said they were not meant to be taken once daily.
My 200mg phenytek pills are the big slow release capsules and I'm worried about how they will mix with the 50mg dilantinchewable tablets. I am worried I'm going to get a rush of meds on the days I take the extra 50mg...
Has anyone had experience with taking the instatabs and the slow release capsules together to meet a good level? Will my level stabilize even though the instatabs are not slow release? I don't want to keep feeling "out of it" like I do but I want to keep my levels stable.
Thanks... that was long.. sorry..
