Last night hubby and I were watching tv after our son went to bed and I had a couple beers. I had 2-3 beers, which I do just about every Saturday. Nothing like this has ever happened, so I don't think that what happened was related to the beers, but who knows.

Anyway, out of nowhere I felt like I was going to get sick and I ran to the bathroom. My husband followed me b/c I didn't say anything before I bolted. I sat in front of the toilet and layed my head over the opening. My husband said that shortly after I got in there I completely lost consciousness, I slumped over between the toilet and the wall, then my whole body started convulsing. He had to hold me up.

Do you think that I had a TC or just something weird from feeling sick? Should I call my doctor in the morning? I have blacked out and convulsed before but it has alwas been when I have a stomach bug and I black out right AFTER I vomit really hard. I never vomited last night at all, so this was different. I'm not sure what to think. Thanks for any advice.

Hi, Kara,

Sorry you aren't feeling well. I'm glad your husband was there to help you. It sounds like a TC. It would be a very good idea to call your doc in the morning.

If you drink then have a seizure, it could be a coincidence. But so many people in here react badly to alcohol, it may have also been the trigger for your seizure.

Do you keep a seizure diary? It's a good way to keep track of possible triggers and seizures.

Yes, I'm sorry to say but it sounds like you had a T/C. Actually there were 2x out of a bunch of T/C's that I first felt sick to my stomach and then took a T/C. These were weird for me since I never normally felt sick to my stomach before a T/C. I also did not have any alchohol during these times so I can't say if it was the beer or not but regardless there are many that can't drink due to their seizures so please be careful.

I guess I should mention that I have CPS, but don't typically lose consciousness during them, and am on 200mg Carbamazepine 2x/day. I haven't had a single CPS since I started my meds a couple months ago. All of my tests came back normal, but my doctor put me on meds anyway b/c he "didn't want them to escalate to TC's".
My husband is convinced that it wasn't a seizure and I have no reason to call my doctor.

Is it possible that you are coming down with a bug or that you might be pregnant? My cps secondarily generalize into t/cs. I lose consciousness during these so according to everyone else, when I have one: I make a sound, my hands draw up, my eyes roll back in my head, I go straight backwards (if standing), I arch A LOT (their emphasis), my arms and hadns shake, I don't breath and I grunt. When I come out of one I'm disoriented and apparently quite unpleasant to those around me. I've only been incontinent twice (not badly) and I've only bit my tongue on the RARE occasions I've had a sez in my sleep.

That's my experience though. Everyone has them differently and you should really call your doctor and let him know about what happened. The only thing that might need to be done is have your meds tweaked.

Years ago, my seizures started out as CP seizures also, but eventually escalated to TC seizures. From what you described, it does sound like a TC to me. The dr. may need to increase the meds, since you've only been on them for a couple of months. And for some, alcohol can lower the seizure threshold also.

Well, I called my doctor today and he says that he doubts it was a seizure at all. I can't remember what he called it, but he thinks it was just from feeling sick. Hmm.

Thanks guys!

Your body started convulsing, and he thinks it was just "feeling sick?" That doesn't sound right to me. Sure, passing out and vomiting. But convulsing??? Did he give an explanation of that?

Yeah, he gave it a name but I can't remember what he called it...vasovagal syncope maybe? I don't know. I don't get it either.

From that description, I think I had a seizure. My husband said my eyes rolled back in my head, and I was sitting when it happened. He said I definitely convulsed. What is strange is that I have absolutely NO recollection of it happening. I remember everything else from that night, including going into the bathroom and then later going to bed, but had no clue I passed out or convulsed until he told me the next day.

Something I've learned after having epilepsy for years is that if I'm not sure I had a seizure..... I did.

So, maybe it is time to GO IN to see your doctor, or maybe find a new doctor? I find it amazing he would diagnose something like that over the phone and not want to see you ASAP.

He seemed irritated and blew me off like I was an idiot for even calling about something like that. I talked to him for a total of about 30 seconds. *sigh* We are going to be moving out of the state by the end of the year, so I'll stick it out with him until then.

You are willing to put up with him for another 6 months? You are a very patient person.

I'd do the research now to find a really good epi in your new state, and call and make the appointment now. It can take up to 3 months or more to get in to see a really busy doc. Look here to find a regional epilepsy center in your new state: http://www.naecepilepsy.org/find.htm

You'll get much better care at a regional center. They should have state of the art docs and equipment. Much better than you are getting now. You'll probably need a referral to get in, so ask your PCP. Sounds like your neurologist is a bit of an irritant, and may not give you the support you need.

And if you are losing patience now, there are a couple of regional centers in Nebraska:

Immanuel Medical Center Epilepsy Care Center
6901 N 72nd Street
Omaha, NE 68122
(402) 697-1601

Nebraska Epilepsy Center
Nebraska Medical Center 982045 Nebraska Medical Center
Omaha, NE 68105
(402) 559-8600

If you tell me that less-than-good (aka idiot) doctor you are seeing works at one of these places, I think I'll lose all faith.

Normally I would have no problem finding a new doctor right away. I have Addison's Disease and am on my 3rd Endocrinologist since I was dx'd 6 years ago. I love her and plan to stay with her even when we move b/c I can come back for my yearly visit when we come back to see our families. For the most part I just need her for med refills b/c my AD never really gives me any problems. I just don't want to find another Neurologist here and love them and then have to find another one where we move.

We will be moving to somewhere in Missouri, not sure where yet. We are still looking for the right property. It won't necessarily be 6 months from now, b/c we hope to move as soon as we find the right place (well, once we sell our current house, that is). We will at least by moved by the end of the year. We're going down there this weekend to look at a few places. Depending on where we live, I could either go to Kansas City or St Louis.

No, the doctor I see doesn't practice at either of those places. lol

Kara...if you had a TC it is completely normal to have no recollection of what occurred. It isn't a case of "passing out" as you would when fainting or are too drunk per se...you lose consciousness for the duration of the sez. Most people who have TCs don't remember the convulsing part or what happens right before or right after one happens.
