I was in for a video EEG a couple of weeks ago, and off medication. No seizures (figures!) but I did have one occurrence of something that to me was REAL but unconfirmed and therefore interpreted by the doctor as a hallucination:
I was 36 hours into no medication, and was having a terrible night of sleeping (restless, uncomfortable in a strange bed in a strange place, and just not sleepy). To me, I had finally fallen asleep but kind of woke because someone asked if I was okay, and I replied "Just frustrated because I can't fall asleep". I think I drifted off again briefly, then I was aware my bed was shaking, then being moved back and forth as if someone was wheeling it away from the wall and slowly angling it back into the wall (not a true spin like vertigo might cause). Then as plain as day I heard someone say "We're not going to keep this up much longer. Just long enough that we know she doesn't need to keep having nights like this." Then a couple of seconds later: "There is no point in checking for level of consciousness". For whatever reason I didn't roll over to look around but I was convinced I must have had a seizure and the nurse and EEG tech had come to check on me. A few hours later it was daylight, and the hospital unit came to life and there was no hope in trying to sleep more. I woke very confused about what happened, muscles were weak and I that "congested chest" feeling I often have after a bad seizure.
I told the doctor and both night and day nurses what happened, but no one spoke in my room that night, and while it was evident I was restless there was no video of a seizure and nothing on the EEG. Of note is that I have a hearing loss, so while I would have heard someone near me there is no way I was hearing someone in the hall or the next room.
I've never had such an occurrence before in my life! Is this the result of being taken off medication suddenly? Is it a hallucination, seizure?? The only other kind of hallucination-type episodes (seizures?) I've had have been rare, and pertain to physical sensations of my body - suddenly feeling like my head is expanding in size, or my hand. Typically, though, my seizures are tonic nocturnal.
Any thoughts on this much appreciated!
