Has anyone had vestibular symptoms such as ear ringing, eye blurriness, ear fullness, and feeling off balance when walking and these symptoms can go on for weeks at a time?
Curious if there is a connection to this and epilepsy.
I've had these systems off and on for over three years and they came on after I turned on my side in bed one night and got a spinning sensation that lasted several seconds. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this.

Thanks for your help.
Sending good thoughts to everyone!
D

Have you been on the same medicine for the three years? Dizziness can be a common side effect. It is for me.

YOU'RE NOT ALONE

Hi "D", I'm glad you posted this.
My name is Randy from Canada.
I've had Epilepsy since 1979 and is now 95% controlled with meds.

I have the same symptoms as you describe.
My Neurologist says it's a side affect from the meds (mostly from Dilantin).
My gait and co-ordination are both very poor and spinning beds (all this gets a lot worse with age)

I can't walk a straight line, (can't look up without holding on to something), can't run or participate in any sports, ears constantly ringing, etc. (but at least my seizures are controlled. LOL)

I noticed it about 10 years ago and it's been getting worse every year.
My Doctor says that the only way to "help" is to go off all meds, excersice and lose weight.
Most people think I'm drunk or recently had a stroke.

So I know what you're going through.
Randy

I don't have any of these symptoms in general. Sometimes before or after a seizure I may have blurred vision.

It could be a side effect of one of the meds you are on. Sometimes side effects won't show up right away, it could be a few years.

One thing too about meds is even if it is helping with your seizures it could cause bad side effects. You might have to decide if you can deal with the side effects or not. If you can't then you can ask your dr to try another med and see how it works. You may have to go through a few different meds because the first one might not work or you could start having side effects from it and again need to change to another.

When you start switching around with your meds you could start having seizures while doing it. If you find one that you can deal with it may not control your seizures as well as the original one and you'll have more in general.

Hi Daisy Duke
Vertigo was my main symptom which led to my diagnosis of epilepsy. I had those symptoms you are describing for 9 months and went to ENT doctors and they thought it was labyrinthitis. It was only after I had a couple of obviously neurological symptoms that I went to a neurologist and was able to have it properly diagnosed. My neurologist said that dizziness and vertigo can be an uncommon presentation of seizures. There is also a type of epilepsy called vestibular epilepsy he said.

Whilst my dizziness has been better on the medication, I do notice when I am not as well that I get ear symptoms again, and these have been checked out by an ENT and definitely not ear related. I feel like my ear is blocked and sometimes get ringing. I had this before the meds also. I do believe there is a connection there.
