Hi all, I have just joined this forum to ask this particular question but, still, I look forward to being connected with others here who want to ask questions and compare experiences.

My husband has had epilepsy for over 50 years and we have been married for nearly 30 years. Over this time, I have gained a lot of care-giver experience that I had not anticipated. He is a wonderful man and partner and we refuse for him to be defined by his epilepsy.

Meanwhile, it appears after changing medications a couple of years ago, he has developed esophagitis and gastritis. This was diagnosed yesterday as he had an endoscopy. The GI doctor wants him to start on Prilosec but I am concerned that this drug (and other PPIs) can deplete his magnesium level such that he falls below the seizure threshold. Perhaps Tagamet would work for him but I'd like to benefit from the experience of others in this community as it appears that gastritis from anti-seizure meds is quite common. Have any input or suggestions for me? Many thanks!

Hi, clg29, and welcome to CWE!
What you ask are great questions for your pharmacist, as s/he will be able to tell you about drug interactions.

Hi clg29,

Welcome to CWE! I've had epilepsy for 44 yrs. and been on many seizure meds. A few yrs. ago I had gastric problems with sharp pain in my stomach along with having to run to the restroom time after time. I saw a Gastric specialist and come to find out the drug Mysoline (primidone) that I have been taking for so many yrs. ate up the lining of my intestines and I had to go on a low fat diet no sweets or coffee and I had to eat a lot of yogurt and this cleared the problem up. If your husband has been taking a med for a long time this could be the problem. I wish you and your husband the best of luck and May God Bless You Both!

Sue
