Hi there,

I'm just curious, if exercise can increase dietary metabolism, can exercise also affect drug metabolism?ie: exercise can get the AED out of your system faster?)

I've generally been one to be fit and exercise regularly, and have had seizures once a month or so, but because of various circumstances, I haven't been exercising much for the past 5 or so month, and I haven't had any seizures, which is very surprising. I've gone bouts without seizures this long in the past, but I haven't been keeping diary or comparing.

Im completely aware that everyone reacts to AED's differently, and I know each person has different triggers fir seizures.

My question is if exercise may influence drug metabolism.

Thank you,

Good question, as I exercise fairly regularly as well. What came up when you looked this up on the internet (eg. in Google Scholar)? This a great question for your pharmacist and neurologist as well.

I know exercise can speed up metabolism as in how fast and how many calories you burn but I do not think it can increase liver enzyme production or kidney function.
The improved diets that often go along with exercise programs could possibly lead to better drug clearance by reducing strain on the liver and kidneys allowing them to better clear drugs.

This is just me thinking here, no scientific studies to cite.

Exercise does speed up our metabolism you pee more which makes the kidneys a but quicker by necessity but most seizure meds are metabolized by the hepatic system and exercise cannot really increase liver function. My neuro says that exercise causes imbalances in electrolytes to which epileptics are highly sensitive. Basically sodium and potassium levels which could very well be what's going on with the differences between exercise and none for you. Blessings!
