I had a vns implanted two weeks ago and tomorrow I am going to get it activated. I had the stitches checked today to make sure everything had healed up properly, so everything is ok for now. But....what should I expect starting tomorrow afternoon? I am prepared for the coughing and hoarsness, but do these happen only during the active period or all the time? Also, is the magnet annoying to wear or carry, and also do you have another one being carried by someone elsr? I feel that by the time my husband realizes I'm having a seizure it will be too late to be useful. However, the seizures often last several minutes so maybe that could be helpful to him at those times. Anyone with some info to send on to me? Thanks

Hi Kathy,

I've had the VNS now for over 13 years and it has worked well for me. I had it done as a last resort as nothing else provided relief of seizures for me. The first stimulator's battery only lasted for years. This one I've had for 10 years now, so will be needing another replacement soon.

The hoarseness/coughing occurs for me during the stimulation, but when it is turned on initially, it will probably happen more often. Usually they turn it on charging every 5 minutes for 10 seconds. I have mine on rapid cycling, charging every 3 minutes for 7 seconds. So when I go running, bike riding, etc, it can cause coughing and sometimes wheezing. I keep my magnet in my pocket or purse, where my friends, family know where to find it when they see me go into an "aura" My daughter has used it when she witnessed auras.
